ABSTRACT

The purpose of this project is to deal with the problem of truancy with particular reference to influence of peer group, inadequate school materials, poor feeding at home, poor meth0od of teaching, too much work in the morning at home before coming to the school etc. in Ikpoba Okha Secondary School Students, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area in Edo State of Nigeria. In this project, I have tried to find out the cause of the above problem in this particular school. This project and deals with what other authors said are the possible causes and solutions to the problems. To get the actual causes of this problem, oral interviews were conducted for various groups of people in the school and the community. Some causes of the problem of the study were identified; solutions and recommendation which the reader shall come across were highlighted. If the community and the government jointly implement the recommendations given, future occurrence of similar problems in Ikpoba Okha Secondary School Students can be averted.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The origin of truancy among secondary school students situated at Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State. The schools in Ikpoba Okha are divided it names from the clan of origin in the early state, the population of the school were few but now they are vast. Today, among the students of the schools there was many truants and deviant behaviour has greatly hindered the progress of the schools generally. I have taken it up as a responsibility to find out the causes of the truancy and the way to stop the evil. This long essay on the causes of truancy is intended to take a critical look into one or the major rules that influence students to the truancy in secondary schools. Some of the truants students will go with their fellow students to indulge in watch video in their own resident.

Justice R. A. L. Ogbobin, said that broken homes are assess to truancy. Truancy is a great danger in a discipline school possibly the whole students in the school to delinquent. This is true because students initiative and don’t at the moment realized the consequences of their delinquency. The measuring of the truancy in the secondary school students, I shall be taking a random sample of the truants find out from that the cause of truancy from their homes, schools and the society they live. It is against this research in the solution of the above measure of truancy and not far fetch. The teacher should advice the parents of the students to provide the students with adequate or requisite school materials and also let parents know the problem if causes failing to do so, teacher should not bully on the students, because hinder the students backwardness.

A student should be corrected by the teacher. The government should go further to make law to punish those couples whose home are broken leaving the children to play truancy. It is against this background that this research work is structured to examine the factors and consequences (effects) of truancy on students of origin and destination which will be vividly focused on Benin City. I shall finally suggest suitable measures that should help to reduce the evil.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

Over a long period of time the problem of truancy among students in secondary school a drift has been a serious one which generated a matter of concerns among scholars. This problems of truancy has militated against the goals and objectives setup by the parents and our educational policy makers for the education. the daily reduction of this students due to truancy in a school also creates a high rate of absenteeism this leads to the poor result of the students truancy can mislead some students to different kinds of crime of the following:

a.          Stealing

b.          Fighting

c.           Understanding type of activities that are worthless

d.          Using and bullying on people

In this research, my mere writing can not put a stop to the problem of truancy; but can do so by suggesting way to be carried out by the government and education authorities. A student may be naturally gifted if he becomes a delinquent in the school, he can not develop his innate potentialities to the fullest. Truancy is a common in the life of the students themselves their parents and in turn development of a nation.

iv.         To put forward some recommendations on the effects of truancy in the life of the students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study of the causes of truancy in the society is advantageous. As the evil can easily spread as wildfire, it should be stopped to avoid many students falling into it as victims. If the evil in our school and other similar sources, the students will have the assess to perform well in school activities. Any where the clever ones have the chance to go higher. Students are exposed to the pleasure of good loves of school environment where by they interacts for the development of their society. facing the solution of these crimes like lateness to school, serving as a bus conductor during school hours, hunting birds in the bush at the time they are supported to be in school, wikll be drastically there reduced.

Finally, this study and research finding will also be significant in such a way that it will serve as a pointer to other research who may be interested in the study.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The teaching profession previously was accorded with respect, honor and dignity. This enviable profession was a sort of motivation to many teachers. Also not only afford life career and permanent membership but also renders services to the public. It has code of ethics; the code of ethics for teachers is contained in the handbooks of the Nigeria union of teachers. They were revealed and give pride of place in the study. But recently, the government and all its organs neglect teachers and the educational sector, while motivation can be brought about by adequate remuneration, fringe benefits and recognition. They can also be made to occupy high social status in the society.

However, in spite of the facts that this motivation was not really there, teachers still did their work conscientiously producing desired result. There is no doubt before 1980 teachers started to recognize their own worth and demand for their right when these was not forth coming their attitude to their work began to change and this was the beginning of the down word side in education in the country. It was also the beginning of industrial actions by teacher’s nationwide. There is no other saying that the primary motive of investing is to meet the organization goals therefore there are certain factors which need to be considered in order to attain the above is the realization of objectives. Moreover, it is important to note that motivation is important if the desired level of performance would be attained. Thus the employers they should be aware that old methods of persuading society to produce the desired result. Therefore, it is necessary for employers of labour to be fully equipped with all the motivational tools and their applications if the stated organizational objectives would be activated. It is the hope and the belief of the researcher that if employers wants their employee to perform effectively they should reciprocate by providing the necessary incentives for examples newspaper, daily times in expressing the light of teachers work that it is totally unjustifiable and well reasonable to notice bond treatment towards teachers.

Teachers arte the producers of the following bank manager, oil miners, judge, chief accountant, lawyers, senators, governors even the president. But it is the salary of the teachers that is always delayed and it is the arrears of salaries to teachers that are usually dumped in sides dustbins untouched at the school boards is in heaven. Thus they succeeded in maintaining and improving educational standard as by Ubjuke effective performance on the part of the employers is essential for the success of the organization. An understanding of what motivate individual is necessary to reveal and potential released.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

“Almajiri” is a hausa word meaning immigrant children in search of search of Qur’anic education. The children are sent out early in life to seek Islamic knowledge outside their environment. They are placed under Islamic teachers known simply as ‘mallam’ under whom they are supposed to learn the rudiments of the religion.

Khalid (2000), describes almajiranci as seasonal migration of school age male children from rural to urban areas in northern Nigeria in search of Qur’anic education. In this contemporary era, Almajiranci has degenerated to the extent that it has now greatly exposed the children to various types of moral or social hazards. Many of these children metamorphasize into drug addicts, dropouts, street beggars etc. they seldom go back to their villages or home towns.

The Almajiri system of education during the pre-colonial days, pupils hold with then parents for within the immediate environment from where the pupils came from (Junaid: 2004). The Danfodio revolution brought with it some modifications, the establishment of an inspectorate of quranic literacy, the inspectors reported directly to the emir of province,  concerning all matters relating to school.

Shehu (2004), states that the colonialists specifically came up with policies aimed at destroying the traditional Qur’anic schools and replacing them with the western style school. Some people in protest of ave their children in trust to the Qur’anic schools wama to go to the village or its outskirt to teach them Qur’an. It was after independence that serious efforts were made to improve the system of Qur’anic schools. Islamic scholars and organizations like Jama’atul Nasril Islam (JNI) struggled to establish and maintain the schools. Sir, Ahmadu Bello Sardauna of sokoto’ established Quranic schools in muslim localities, this effort gave birth to Ishuyyats.

1.2    STATEMENT OF THE  PROBLEM

The Almajiri pupils brought to learn the Qur’an, some dropout along the way and become a problem to the society. Most pupil withdraw due to hardship that is endured during the training, also with the growing complex nature of the society. People tend to complain at the act of begging which is becoming unpopular and unacceptable.

In some cases, the very resourceful among the pupils do menial jobs (such as washing, grass cutting, farming and water barrow pushing) to earn their livelihood (Abdulkadir: 2003) Shehu (2004), viewed that the greatest havoc of begging is of how it expose the children to a number of environmental hazards psychologically it instills in the children a sense of inferiority, dependency, rejection and all sorts of negative psychological dispositions. In the social sphere their limitless movements and interactions exposes them, and in many cases gets them induced in a number of social vices, they easily come across various kinds of dangerous juvenile and adolescent peers. Indeed they come across all sorts of people and experiences in the society the good, the bad and the ugly. As juveniles, they can hardly discern right from the wrong, especially if they see people that are assured committing them. The problems mentioned above, led to my research on the ‘Almajiri system of education, its implication on child, family and nation.

CHAPTER ONE

1.1     INTRODUCTION

English language originated in England and is now widely spoken throughout the continents. It is the primary language of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Austrialia, Ireland, New Zealand, and various small Island nations in the Carribean Sea and Pacific Ocean. It is also an official language of India, the Philippines and many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa. In Nigeria, English Language is the lingual Franca. This makes the language an indispensable tool for students in the country to communicate and interact socially because of the numerous indigenous languages/dialects spoken by the different ethnic groups in different parts of the country. Some dialects are similar both in spoken and in written form, while others are radically different from one another. These Nigerian languages include Kwale, Owan, Urhobo, Edo, Ijaw and Yoruba. However, none of these dominant tribal languages has been generally accepted as a national language. English language is the official language in Nigeria and the means through which the colonial masters in their era used in uniting the various tribes for communication to take place.

English language is global the language of technology, science, aviation and computer, education and at that a world language of importance. Therefore efficient spoken/written knowledge of English Language is of basic importance to the study of every other subject of Standard English language command respect and prestige in the society. Inspite of the importance of correct use of English language, it is found that in particular students perform woefully in its usage both in examinations and daily life interactions.

A number of factors contribute to the situation one of which is the constant used of pidgin English in the study and living situations including the primary and junior secondary schools. It becomes challenging as the role of teachers in teaching English language in the primary and junior secondary schools. To speak Standard English with the students especially those in junior secondary moreso the certificate classes level of JSS III, SS III level. This will be English teachers encouraging the pupils to speak it every time and anywhere with availability of adequate instructional materials to aid the teaching and learning of English language.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

Pidgin English is traceable to the Portuguese coming to Nigeria as traders and missionaries. Pidgin English is a hybrid language, contains elements of both immediate African language speaking environment and English. It is learned usually as L2 at times as L1. It is not what a learner learn by itself because it is no developmental. It is a fairly closed language sound system and serves restricted numerous functions an expanding to serve fresh function by wholesale borrowing of vocabulary from English. The missionaries from Portugal used pidgin English as a means of communication with the natives of the coastal lands.

Today, Pidgin English is used to facilitate communication link among individual, serves as a language of the literate and the illiterate in the Nigerian society. However, this Pidgin English which is mostly used at homes market, primary and junior secondary schools among peer groups should be stepped aside in the school system gamut of the society by the teachers so that standard English acquisition and command comes to the way of learners. This will make students take the standard English learning and efficient daily use serious and afford them active a command of good English in terms of communication and enjoyable social interaction.

1.3     PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The study purpose among others investigate the reasons students use Pidgin English instead of a Standard English. Also to make them know it has effect on their use of English i.e. it hampers proficient use and retards progress in acquiring good English language. The study would also show the way out to students on how to minimize Pidgin English usage in their daily performance.

1.4     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of this study is to be found among others in parents/students and teachers recognition that Pidgin English usage slows down the pace of efficient use of English. In various homes, native language is spoken most often, then the pidgin English and there English. It may be in form of our dialects, Pidgin English or Standard English. The background of our upbringing matters a lot, when we are taught in pidgin for instance, there is no way we can have a good command of Standard English anywhere we find ourselves. Rather the parents who had trained up their children with Standard English would be proud of their children, hearing them use Standard English to communicate, Standard English enhances the children’s educational standard because English is a means through which every other subject is taught.

In the same vein, a situation where a child is trained to use Pidgin in communication, the child finds it difficult to understand his teacher when the lesson is going on. Therefore, if a child is trained up with standard English at school, the child learns easily without any stress or strain to understanding the language used by the teacher (i.e. Standard English). Teachers does not find it difficult to disseminate any information to such Standard English background oriented student(s). the teacher would be happy seeing his students excel in the examinations and of course the students would command respect or prestige in the society using eloquently the Standard English.

1.5     RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. 1.  Are there available qualified teaches handling the teaching/learning of English language?
  2. 2.  Does Pidgin English have any influence on the teaching and learning of English Language?
  3. 3.  Is there any relationship between Pidgin English and English Language?

ABSTRACT

The aim of this research work is to find out the role of instructional materials in the teaching of computer science in junior secondary schools, using all junior secondary schools in egor local government area of edo state as a case study. A total of 100 students were used on this study. The instrument used for data collection was the questionnaires which were administered personally by the researcher to five randomly selected schools in Egor local government area of edo state.

The method used for data analysis was normal data simple percentage was used to examine the role of instructional materials in teaching of computer science in junior secondary schools.

Findings of the study are as follows;

1. To the extends at which instructional materials facilitate learning is recommendable.

2. Despite the high cost of getting instructional materials, teachers in junior secondary schools take it as a task to improvise for instructional materials

. 3. Pupils easily remember topics taught with the use of instructional materials than those taught without the use of instructional materials.

4. Pupils in junior secondary schools find it easily to put into practice those topics and lessons taught with the use of instructional materials.

5. Instructional materials when properly used during teaching enhance and lead to better performances of pupils during given assignment, test and examinations.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Instructional materials are that things that enables students to have mental picture of what has been taught and to retain the message in their memory for a very long time e.g. Radio, Television, Chalkboard, Charts, Micro-Projectors, Still Pictures, Specimen e.t.c. It can be referred to as those things that the classroom teacher uses to impact knowledge to pupils in the classroom in order to achieve his objectives.

According to Ogunmola, (2002) cited instructional materials as visual or audio visual materials which facilitate the assimilation of organization. Infact, for effective teaching and learning to take place, instructional materials are can exist without adequate use of computer science education programme can exist with adequate use of computer equipment examples of such equipment are computer, monitor, keyboard, typewriter, mouse, scanner, printer, duplicating machine e.t.c these science equipment are indispensable to a good computer science teaching and training and learning.

It is no gain saying that interest in learning computer science is increasing in Nigeria. Each local government area is trying t o improve on the production of technology. This is justify for computer science has totally assured great importance interest role of national power and productivity. According to the new trend of computer science, teaching has as shown a radical departure of traditional expository mode, in favour of practical and inquiry method to the inclusion of problems solving and active involvement of people in the open minded fielding practical exercise.

Some of the objectives of computer science in junior secondary school are as follows

1.  to develop a computer scientific attitude

2.  to develop interest in an appreciation of the plan of life through the computer

3.  to develop or help the child acquire a scientific method of solving problems

4.  to also help the child acquire a useful knowledge of computer science

5.  to also help the child acquire a useful knowledge of computer scientific principles

In view of this, it can therefore be assumed that uniqueness facilities and equipment are available in junior secondary school. For practical works pupils will not derive much from the attempt to learn computer science. It has been stressed by Howard (2003) when he said what we learn is what we do” doing what we learn in computer science requires the use of practical work. We also have the bear in mind that at least some of the pupils would or may need to become professionally computer list. Such pupils need the equipment to be able to develop necessary practical skills. Beside, the basic sources of computer science experience is of course of direct contact which objects and events it’s in nature outside the classroom

Specifically some specific educational reasons to have equipment for teaching was summarized by Balogun (2000) as follows

1.  It enables the learners to develop functional and manipulating skills

2.  It enables the learner to develop problem solving skill and scientific attitude

The acquisition of these skills is the contribution of computer science education in the general preparation of the youth with emphasis on activities based on child centered learning coupled with pupils enrolment into school in the face of corresponding decline economy. It is against the background that we can appreciate the significance of the question “the important role of computer science equipment in secondary school

1.2     STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

There are many problems and obstacles which hinder the effective teaching of computer science in our junior secondary schools. Despite the importance attached to the subject there is no junior secondary school in Egor local government area in Edo state where the range of resources available for the teaching of computer science can be described as being in anyway adequate

This arises as a result of inability of these materials especially now, due to foreign exchange restriction and large populations of junior secondary schools pupils.

The aspects of this problems will be dealt with in this study which has the survey of material resources required by the teaching of computer science. In junior secondary school in Egor local government area of Edo state.

The following specific questions can be asked does teachers in junior secondary school improvised or substitute for instructional materials which are not easily obtained

Are there enough materials resources for computer teaching in junior secondary school? What are the materials that can be improved?

1.3  OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to survey the materials resources available for the teaching of computer science in junior secondary school in Egor local government area.

The study will examine

1.  The availability of facilities in our schools

2.  Whatever and how computer teacher in junior secondary schools improved or subtitle for the materials which are not easily obtainable

3.  The type of materials that can be sub titled

1.4  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

It is hope that the findings of this study will be beneficial to educational agencies in Egor local government area of Edo state.

It should be of great important to educational administrates in the distribution of resources to schools

Further more, the result of the finding will be of great benefit to the computer science teachers in other impact the required computer science skills to the pupils

1.5 SCOPE OR LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of the study will cover many materials resources available for the searching of computer science and the type of materials that can be substituted or improvised.

This study is therefore intended to show through the use of questionnaires. The availability of standard and improved computer science equipment or facilities in ten (10) randomly selected junior secondary schools in Egor local government Area.

1.6  RESEARCH QUESTION

1.  To what extent is the role of instructional materials in the teaching of computer science in junior secondary school

2.  Do teachers in junior secondary school improvise for instructional materials which are not easily obtained

3.  Do students in junior secondary school easily remember topic taught with instructional materials than those topics taught without instructional materials?

4.  Do students in junior secondary school find it easy to put into practice what they are taught with the use of instructional material.
