Chapter four was devoted to data analysis, where the researcher adopted the frequency method and percentage to analyze the data collected by means of questionnaire on the final note was chapter five which was devoted to the summary and conclusion and recommendations.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Education is a process through which individual acquires skills, competencies, and attitude. It is the right of every child to be educated, be it traditional or western. Thus, education is been regarded as culture to man, people and the nation of the world at large. This explains why man has to educate himself and his offspring in the society. Poverty is one of the factors militating against man from carrying out his educational activities perfectly. Because of the various perception and complexities of the term poverty, a universally agreed definition cannot be arrived at. But then poverty according to the oxford advanced learners dictionary (2000) defined poverty as the state of being poor.

Oguw Mike (2005) sees poverty as a way of life characterized by low calorie intake, inaccessibility of adequate health facilities low quality education system, low life expectancy, unemployment and under-employment. Leroy and Symes (2001) consider poverty as a major anti-risk factors relating the concept poverty to Nigeria, it will therefore be considered in a broader way which implies that it has be viewed in various perspectives which include one national state and home background. At the national level, a nation can be considered poor when her economic standard is very low and this automatically makes the nation underdeveloped. The economy of a country that does not reached certain stage of development in terms of infrastructure and other development indices. As regard poverty in the family level, we are referring to the home background.  Even before the indigenous education or western type of education, the home has always been the agency through which man learns various aspect of life to enable him live a meaningful life in his environment. The home which is also known as traditional way of educating the young ones is still regarded as the first school of a child before he enters the larger society.

The role of the home cannot be over emphasized because the general assumptions that states of poverty in the family or home goes to a long way to determine the extent of youth or students educational development. Education is seen by many as the route to alleviate poverty. There is no doubt that meaningful; education is the most potent instrument for alleviating and eventually abolishing poverty.

In considering the effect of poverty on academic performance of students to be precise, the home background is the most important phenomenon that needs to be seriously considered in order to enhance the effective study of the relationship between poverty and students academic performance. In view of this, some factors that needed to be considered in the home or family background are parents academic qualification, socio-economic class and facilities available in home or home environment as well as parent status.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Evidence shows that in Nigeria, the number of those in poverty has continued to increase every year. By 1999, when the government came into power, it was estimated that more than 70% of Nigeria lived in poverty. In recent years, it has been a controversy through in the mind of people that if the poor status of any society or nation, even family can really have an impact on the students educational performance. In view of this, the study intends to investigate the positive and negative impact of poverty on the student’s education in Nigeria. This is because the diversity of the world poverty by different scholars who have used it in their course of study and how it has affected the learning and performance of the students in their educational development. Goldstem (1976) admitted this concept when he said that the fact that much of youth educational development takes places in a circle or home, the child begins to attend school in psychological tourism, an attempt would be made to determine the influence of parent’s socio-economic performance and the poverty impact on students education. There is a group which contents the poor have right to be assisted on the bases of group solidarity. Oijkstra (1984) we know that in Africa, the system of the extended family addresses the issues of poverty in the community.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of poverty on the student’s academic performance in Nigeria emphasizing on some selected secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The study is to find out whether students of nation can really be affected with any economic standard of the nation. The study also tries to find out the extend of which any community standard of living can affect the students education in that community. Some teachers are surprise when it comes to evaluate performance of some students such teachers might find a particular students in class performing extremely poor despite all kinds of skills employed in carrying out an effective teaching and learning process which extremely well.

This study will also provide possible suggestion, in enhancing or improving the student’s academic performance by bringing out strategies to alleviate poverty. For instance by introducing the Britain welfare legislative system by providing accommodation, transportation, feeding, sickness benefiting, clothing etc those families living below the poverty level.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is important when looked at from the concept of poverty and the three various factors, the national level, the community level and the home level or family background which influence student’s educational needs. It is hoped that the study definitely identified some of the essential factors existing in the various level as they influence students in their performance. The study will give solution on how to improve students’ academic performance. The level of literacy can also influence the level of performance in economic enterprise. This is why Africa tradition insists on lifelong education as a process of acquiring various types of literacy, cultural, political, religious etc for meaningful and effective living.

The study will also focus on the need for government to incorporate parents in planning, for student. This is because the parents know best the environment under which students at home will learn and other variable which affect their performance. The study also enables us to know that poverty has become serious problem in Nigeria. Despite her oil wealth, Nigeria becomes one of the poorest nation in the world. This life span as short and there are social, political and economic difficulties. Begging has become a vocation to many who now live on the street. The crime rate is alarming, as violence, fraud and armed robbery increase. One way of solving the problem of poverty is to introduce measures ameliorate an equitable distribution of resource.

Henner Hilder Brand (1994) believes that the process of alleviating might be beyond the acquisition of literacy and the introduction of income general efforts. He seems to be suggesting that the cure of poverty would be the conclusion of people in decision and policies. The living conditions of the poor also signify lacks of participatory opportunities in the economics, cultural, political and social areas. The living conditions of the fight against poverty should consequently focus on eliminating the deficits mentioned in order to be effective in the long-run.

RESEARCH QUESTION

For the proper examination of this study, the following have been formulated to serve as a guide in the conduct of the investigation.

  1. What is the impact of environmental factors on the academic performance of students?
  2. To what extent does the economic status of any nation affects its students academic performance?
  3. Does the economic status of the parent have an impact on the academic performance?
  4. Does the educational background of your parent have any impact on your academic performance?
  5. Does lack of equipment like textbooks affect the academic performance?

ABSTRACT

Cultism is a small group of people who have extreme religious believes and not part of an established religion, which original object as turned into destructions? Cultism has destroyed so many lives, wasted so many families, aborted so many future makes our school or institutions of learning uncomfortable. Therefore it has to be completely eradicated totally from our society without knowing the cause of a problem, there is no way such problem can be solved. This study therefore focuses on the factors influencing the growth of cultism in secondary school using questionnaires administration, 40% of randomly selected secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State were sampled the findings revealed that parents, peer groups and power for protection, wealth are factors responsible for the growth of cultism in our country. Recommendations were made on how to totally eradicate cultism from our various secondary schools and society at large.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The last two decade’s have witnessed secret cult violence in higher institution in Nigeria. Cult activities involve blood sharing and waste of human lives; have reached an alarming proportion in Nigeria society today. Media reports blaze the coverage of cult activities in educational institution in Nigeria. These include the activities in the University of Ibadan, Nsuka, Almadu Bello University, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, University of Benin and so on. Coverage also include the polytechnic such as Kwara state polytechnic, Oko polytechnic, Auchi Polytechnic the other polytechnic are not left out. The colleges of education are no exception, cult activities have been reported at the college of education etc.

Cult activities have continued to thrive in Nigeria due to the enormous impression of the seeming invisibility of cult and their members. A major factor working in the favour of cult group is mass ignorance on the part of students especially the new students who are hoodwinked and deceived to join them, secret cult societies could be traced down to the Egyptians. Cultism is the state or phenomenon where persons are bound together with a common belief or cause usually through some rituals. According to Oxford dictionary of current English 5th edition the word “cult” mean a system of religions worship especially one that is expressed in rituals. From this definition cults now popularly know as confraternities, have assumed a monstrous features in our institution of higher learning. To this end therefore our various campuses, which were hitherto a mode of intellectual quest and social uplift most have become citadel of violence and terrorism.

The pertinent question that one may ask is the phenomenon of cult just entering our institution of higher learning? The answer is simply no. this is because international figure have been know t be members of the pirates confraternity in their college days or universities. Furthermore, when there was a violent clash between the Eiye confraternity and the Buccaneers at the universities of Ibadan in (1989) some notable professors and doctors at the institution were fond to the patrons and bankers of these cults. The implication is that these professors and doctors were members of these cults in their own college days. We find and disturbing trend of the proliferation of campuses cult in or institutions of higher learning, such cults are Viking the black axe, the morphine, the buccaneers, the pirates, the black arrow to mention but a few have become a familiar features in our institutions.

Additionally, the attention of the government and the society at large is the introductions of violent, savagery and terrorism into the present day cult a diametrical contrast to what obtained in yester – years. It is now common in or campuses that factors of naval cults violently clash even in broad day light and manta themselves down with dangerous weapons such as guns and daggers, nocturnal initiation ceremonies in which initiates are animalized and some of then die in the process making blood covenants and performing other occultic rituals, organized opposition against any kind of oppression real or imagined liberal consumption of alcohol, use of drugs, intimidation and use of violent, extortion, stealing, armed robbers, arson, sexual abuse and rape, examination malpractice, maiming, manslaughter and murder. The recent occurrence are the university of Ile-Ife, Benin Ekpoma, Ibadan and of the course college of educations to mention but a few artist to these facts. This is what as led to the pubic to speak against the societal evil calling to its total eradication.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

The fundamental problems of cultism are the uncertain and unsafe atmosphere in schools due to the manner of operation is both sinister and bizarre living behind them a trial of destructions most distressing of the problem is the space of killing in our schools in recent times. Many lives have been terminated prematurely. The human carriage of supposed leaders of tomorrow is what is causing a lot of concern to both the government and the entire citizenry. Inspite of measures put in place by the various arms of government and social administrators aimed at combating the ugly trend of cultism. The phenomenon seems to be gaining more popularity and prominence on our secondary schools. What could be responsible for students belonging to the secret cult could it be that they want to acquire power, wealth or influence? Could it be influence fro the peer groups, could they be acquisition for protection, could it be that their parents influence them. The following are the research questions drawn which will lead to proper investigation to find solution to the problems of cultism in our secondary schools.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1.          Does acquisition for power, wealth influence students to be involved in cultism?

2.          Does the influence of peer group a significant factor for joining cult?

3.          Does the parent’s involvement in cultism influence children to join cult?

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This project work will be help to create awareness on the evils of secret cults in our institutions of learning as well as providing solutions to the problems, the only necessary ingredients are determination and constituency of the part of the authorities concerned to fight and uproot this social evils of cultism fro the schools system.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

On the completion of this project work. It will serve the purpose of guiding the individual in higher institutions into the school authorities and the government on how to find solutions to the prevailing problems of cultism in our schools. This study will provide in expository terms the causative factors that create the healthy climate that encourages the growth and spread of cultism in our institution or school. This will therefore provide planners and implementers of policies with the factors that influence cultism in schools. Factors known will enable them to combat cultism squarely and help eradicate the malaise that has become a canker worm in our secondary schools.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In most developing countries of the world education is seen as an important instrument of change that could foster the socio-economic and political development. The need has led to the expansion of education to provide the much needed manpower. In other words, education plays a very important role in the development of nay nation and therefore occupies a position of high priority in the mind of its citizens. As recognized by Harrison (1974) the speed and facility with which any society progress toward solution to its political, social and economic problems are directed and positively related to the quality and quantity of education available to its people in other words the survival of any nation depends upon the effectiveness of its education enterprises.

Primarily education is the first stage of education and is acceptable key to success or failure of the whole educational system.

The primary school is recognized as a spring board to secondary and higher education particularly in Nigeria. Primary school level can be regarded as an instrument in socio-economic development process. Ti this end substantial sum of money are embarked in Nigeria government annual budget for the provision of education services in recognition of the importance of the primary school education to the federal government of Nigeria accorded it a place in the new national policy on education formulated in 1977 and reviewed in 1981.

The schools are becoming large and consequently more bureaucratic. A large number of teachers are either unqualified thereby placing a greater burden on the school heads who are trying to coordinate the school activity. The school system in Nigeria is a major industry catering for the mass education of its citizens to meet the demand and challenges of a changing world consequently the school system has become very complex requiring that report and budget for the various activity and program geared toward the maximum utilization of the scare resources goals these responsibility according to Aderoimu and Ehimentalor (1941) is primary those of administration and supervision in Nigeria for instance the Universal Primary Education school in 1955 opened that gateway to educational expansion although it was first practice in the scheme in the western region other regional government soon borrowed the idea. The introduction of the scheme in western region increased significantly the number of schools which are required to be inspected. Subsequently, military government in Nigeria sustained the idea it wax therefore not surprising when in 1976 then military government of Nigeria Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo declared free Universal Primary Education through out the country, coupled with this is the recent one also launched by retainers Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo free Universal Basic Education in the year 2000 throughout the country.

Free education should be provided for all citizens of age from primary to junior secondary schools level to foster rapid economic development, the aim of the scheme was to effect national development. The high increased in the number of teachers required for the programme to cope with the increase in the number of teacher to enhance teaching learning activities in the classroom. In Nigeria, the geographical division are on local government basis and each local government area office is headed by a Chief Inspector of Education. There are other subordinate workers working with the Chief Inspector among who are the Inspector of school.

Inspection was defined by Wiles (1969) pg. 46 as assistance in the development of a better teaching learning situation. Inspection therefore is recognized as a vital ingredient in enable the teaching learning process to thrive since it exports for the primary aim and improving the instructional programme of the school. Hence, good supervision is a pre-condition for an effective pupils’ teachers relationship which is indispensable for the success of any educational system. With the new 6-3-3-4 system and the ever growing demand for education there is the need for functional types of school inspection that would contributes of improving and maintaining standard in our school bases on the foregoing consideration the main objective of supervision in school has been spelt out as follows;

The establishment and maintenance of standard the control, comparison and corrective action for the purpose of attaining specific overall objective of the educational system. Ogunsaju (1983) education supervision perception and practice in Nigeria.

Inspite of the fact that some form of supervision is sometimes carried out by inspectors of education, headmaster and other to check the teaching learning process in the classroom, the Nigeria child having spent about six years in the primary school of twelve years including secondary school still perform relatively poor. There are good numbers of pupils who fail in the common entrance examination or West Africa School Certificate Examination with many getting a pass grade. It is therefore asserted that if the function of school inspections and the role of headmaster are properly spelt out, school in Edo State in particular Oredo which L.G.A. at the primary school level which is the block of a child education level help in maintain and improving standard in later years.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

i. Inspection in school is concerned with the improvement of instructional ideas, which involves people administration supervisors, teachers, pupils, parents and other citizens it also involves curriculum, the subjection matter, its selection and arrangement.

ii. The content of inspections not only a body of techniques but also a substantial body of knowledge and understanding purpose should be the content of inspection in many situation where work done by group of people have to be effective as a unit.

iii. The falling standard in the educational system may not be unconnected with the poor quality of inspection and headmaster attitude towards school inspection specifically in ordered local government area of Edo State in particular, which is the area of study in question is to the school inspectors is do the school inspector in Ovia North East L.G.A. of Edo State have the right supervision concept and skills to carry out supervision? Is the present inspection division of the ministry of education and its total manpower to meet the needs of school that are continually expanding in the situation of limited personnel from the inspection instruction in school? It is the hope of the researcher that these problems would be solved be seeking answer to the following questions;

a) Is there any impact on day-to-day administration by the headmaster and the influence of school inspection in Ovia North East L.G.A. of Edo State?

b) Is there any difference between the headmaster and the headmistress attitude towards school inspection?

c) Does experience make any difference in the perception of obstacle that hinder effective inspection and headmasters attitude towards school inspection?

d) Is the any difference in the perception of the role of the school inspection based on age?

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to determine the influence of the headmaster attitude towards school inspection in Ovia North East L.G.A. of Edo State.

The researcher would be interested in findings out whether;

a) The experience of the headmaster/headmistress affects the attitude towards school inspection

b) The sex of the headmaster/headmistress affects their attitude towards school inspection

c) The age of the headmaster/headmistress affect their role of school inspection

d) The location of the school affects the headmaster/headmistress attitude toward school inspection

e) The qualification of the school affects the headmaster/headmistress attitude toward school inspection

Specifically, the project will seek to find answer to the following research question;

i. What are the responsibilities of school inspectors?

ii. What are the attitudes of primary school head towards inspection?

f) Does the attitude of primary school of the school affects the headmaster/headmistress have effects on school inspection?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

There seems to be general census among the public that the standard of education has fallen which they may have arrived at by comparing the academic achievement of primary school child today with that of yesterday performed better than today. Without the fallen standard at the primary level will sure affect the standard in the secondary school. These fear therefore add momentum to the need for adequate and positive contribution in the headmaster attitude towards the role of school inspection.
