CHAPTER ONE

  1. BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The school head is the executive officer in charge of any post primary instruction, may be a secondary school, a high school technical school, or a combination of all, for this study. Therefore, the word school head principal, will be used. The ultimate task of any school is the achievement of defined goals. Therefore, the principal as the leader is involved in making management decision, formulating rules, maintaining and coordinating all activities to achieve their goals.

Itsueli (2000) pointed out that the main purpose of leadership in any organization is that of cooperating efforts of people towards the achievement of its goals. In which case, teaching and learning becomes the central aim while the success or failure is goals attained.    The degree of goals attainment therefore, depend on how well the school head is able to act those roles that have been made, in order words, the leadership style adopted.

Kenzevich (2003) identified three main leadership styles in schools namely, the democratic, autocratic and laissez-faire styles of leadership. He further went on to define each of them as follows, that an autocratic leader is one who determines his policies and assigns duties to members of his group without any consultation with them, his words are final and he feels that every member of the group should obey him exceptionally proud and feel very superior.

A democratic leader on the other hand is one who takes decisions and formulates his policies only after consulting members of his group. He interacts always with members of his group. The laissez-faire is one who grants complete freedom to members of his group or individuals to take decision without participation.

No organization can effectively function if such units are streamlined towards the attainment of the organizational goals. The degree of achievement of those attendance units as viewed in this study is a reflection of the quality of leadership within such a functional unit. The indices for measuring such a success in a attendance could include the standard of students performance in the school certificate examination, the general level of students discipline and the degree to which the school is crisis-free.         In essence, this study intends to examine the different leadership style adopted by male and female school heads; it is also designed to measure their success or failure in goal attainment.

  1. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

In Nigeria today, post-primary administrative structure, regardless of their complexities of organization, exhibit some similarities which may be found in many of the relationships, duties and functions expected of a principal within the school.

In Oredo local government, as well as in other parts of Nigeria, the principal in any post-primary school is often seen and perceived by most people as the key person influencing the condition affecting the social relationship within the school. He occupies a unique position in the educational leader and people look up to him for leadership recognizing the fact that the quality of education in school is directly related to his knowledge and still as an education on stimulating people to optimum performance in achieving the institutional goals and objectives. The success or failure of a school depends upon the principal and his success depends on the style of leadership he adopts.

Many researchers have shown that the style of leadership offered school makes a lot of difference in attaining the goals of the institution and it is on the basis of this, that one leadership style is preferred to another.

Knickerbockers (2009) contend that a goal leader must understand the goals of his establishment and must constantly help to clarity them to his subordinates. He has to encourage individuals to contribute to the success of the organization and must be perceived by his followers as controlling needs. This, a leadership style or method must be developed, such that will lead to the most effective utilization of available resources.

Precisely the objectives of study are in four fold which are:-

  1. To determine whether the leadership approach of a principal has any effect on the success of failure of a school.
  2. To determine the leadership styles peculiar to male and female principals.
  3. To also determine the leadership style that is suitable to the success of a school
  4. To identity the different leadership style.

1.3    PURPOSE OF STUDY

This study aims at establishing the relationship between the leadership and performance of subordinates and to show the relevance of the leadership style to the performance of pupils and students.

To present some things those principals can do to cultivate leadership ability that would be of immense help in the administration of schools under their care.

In the course of normal life, many problems of varying degrees often call for different   solutions and not just a solution to solving the problems.

1.4    RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Education must be led by educationalists, not by medical expertise. The following hypothesis serves as a guide to this study.

  1. Is a school in which the principal adopt the democratic style of leadership likely to perform better generally than a school in which the principal adopts autocratic style?
  2. Is a school in which the principal exhibits the autocratic style of leadership likely to perform better than a school where the principal adopts the laissez-faire style?
  3. The male principals autocratic than their female counterpart?

Do female principals exhibit more of a laissez-faire style of leadership than their male counterpart?

Are female principals more democratic than their male counterpart?

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The study will help prospective administers, theorist, policy makers and practitioners in the administration of schools in Nigeria.

Also, the study would show the relationship between leadership behavior of different principals in Nigeria and those of their counterparts in developed countries like America, Britain and Canada. It is also hoped that the efficiency of those in the school system will be enhanced which will help to impose the performance of pupils alike. Thereby enabling they contribute their quota to the development of the society and making the society a better place for all.

1.6    SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study includes ten secondary schools in Oredo local government; four of the ten schools are boys only. Four of them are girls only. Two are mixed out of the ten schools, two are privately owned.

Leadership styles are known to be numerous and vary from one person to another, but this study was confined to three methods namely: Democratic style of leadership, Autocratic style of leadership

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF STUDY`

A single parent is a parent not living with a spouse or a partner. The single parent has most of the day to day responsibilities in raising the child or children.

Single parenthood is the practice of raising children or building family without a spouse or partner. As a choice of building a family, single parenthood (single parenting) is now acceptable in our society. In western society in general the child will end up with the primary caregiver usually the mother or the secondary caregiver usually the father when there is a separation. Some sociologist perceives the prevalence of single parenting as an alternative family form, rather than as a problem in the society. Regardless of how it is perceived, the increase of families raised by one parent influences the social economical and political context of family life.

In Nigeria, the existence of single parent was formerly unknown and where they existed they were ignored as exceptional cases. However, nowadays they are fast growing family pattern both inside and outside Nigeria. Although there is no available statistic of single parent in Nigeria, practical experience and newspaper report shows that there is an increase of single parent in Nigeria.

Historically death of a partner was a major cause of single parenting, other causes include divorce of a couple with children parent that never married, early pregnancy e. t .c. however, children with single parent are three times more likely to dropout of school than children from two parent families (similes and lee, zool). The demographic of single parenting show a general increase worldwide in children living in single parent homes. A child from home where the father and mother are present will be taken care of and socialize in best way possible, this is due to the fact that the process of socialization depend on both parents playing complimentary role in the upbringing of the child such a child is likely to achieve self actualization later in life, unlike children from single parent home who are likely to suffer deprivation and denial of some right and opportunities.

Over the past 20 years single parent families have become even more common than the nuclear family. Life in a single parent household through common can be quite stressful for the adult and for the children. Member of a single parent family can function like the two parent family and may not feel comfortable when it cannot. The single parent may feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities of caring for the children; maintain a job and keeping up with the bills.

Amato (2003) suggested that single parent is problematic for children socialization because many with one parent receive less economic and emotional support, less practical assistance less information, guidance and supervision, less role modeling than children in two parent families those. Among children in single parent families those from mothers absent household earn lower grades than children from fathers absent homes and matter which are absent children from single parent families generally find it difficult to connect with school activities both academically and morally (Murkey et al 2004).

The family is the first socializing agent; the child come in contact with it has a great influence on the child’s physical mental and moral development. The father is to provide the necessary tools for educational while the mother is supposed to supplement the father’s effort in this regard when the father is absent and the mother is not privilege enough to cater for all the basic needs as well as supervised the child educationally and morally will be backward. The teacher at school commonly describe children from as more hostile, aggressive, anxious, fearful, hyperactive and distractible than children from two parent families.

One is therefore motivated to ask the question “what is the effect of single parenthood on the academic performance of pupils”?

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Generally speaking, two good heads are better than one. The role parents play in the upbringing of a child is very important and so many male and female children in school are portraying habits which seem not to be in accordance with the school rules and regulation e.g. fighting, stealing, female pupils keeping male companies, keeping bad companies. And this has negative effect on the academic performance of the pupils.

This prompted the researcher to investigate effect of single parenthood on the academic performance of pupils in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State.

RESEARCH QUESTION

Research generally is to understand or find answers to problem that the researcher may be interested in. in the quest for solution the researcher’s talk is to ask pertinent question whose aim is to address whatever could be bothering the researcher.

For the purpose of the present study, the following questions were asked.

  1. Does single parenthood have any effect on the academic performance of pupils in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State?
  2. Do children from single parenthood enjoy the support of both parents financially in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State?
  3. Are children from single parenthood properly guided in terms of future career in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State?
  4. Does the manner of treatment given to children from single parent/broken homes affect their academic performance?
  5. Does the attitude of teachers towards children from single parent home affect the academic performance of the children?

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

This is designed to find out the effect of single parenthood on academic performance of pupils and also to offer solution to the effect this might have in the pupils generally.

SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

This research work will give proper understanding about the effect of single parenthood on children academic performance of pupils in Egor Local Government Area, and prevent them from developing attitude that may affect the child or children academically.

It will also enable the government to understand and be able to face the danger and problem of single parenthood and find ways of curbing this danger that is eating deep into the fabric of our society.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study is expected to cover all the primary school in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State to find out the effect of single parenthood on the academic performance of pupils in the primary school. But considering the fact that there are many primary schools in the local government, the researcher limited it to some selected primary school in the local government.

  1. Ugbowo Primary School, Ugbowo.
  2. Edaiken Primary School.
  3. Eweka Primary School, Useh.
  4. Iyesigie Primary School, Uselu.

INTRODUCTION

  1. BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

According to Cleaner Casiellino, Michinery and Terry Vilarcial [2005] parenting is the term summarizing set of behaviors involved across life, in the reactions among organisms that are usually the same and typically members of different but cohorts. Parenting interaction provide resources across the generational groups and functions in regard to domains individual survival reproduction, nature and socialization, this parenting is a complex process involving much more than a mother or father providing food and succor to an infant or child. Parenting involves bio-directional relationship between members of two or more generation and can extend through all major parts of the respective life spans of these groups which may engage all institution within a culture including education, economic, political and designed settings which the group left behind [Ford and Leaner Lager] “parenting is both a biological and social process.

The training given to a child, to a large extent determine his or her self-concept. The parenting styles of individual also determine how the child will adjust to the society emotionally. There are different families. There is the single parent homes, the two parents homes and the multiple parents homes which is generally known as polygamy. In these homes you find different styles of parenting being used. These parenting style have a way of affecting the self-concept of individual adolescents and their emotional adjustment in the society.

The parenting styles, goes a long way in determining how an individual sees his or herself, perception concerning his or her physical, social and psychological aspiration and emotional adjustment in the society in which he or she lives. It is therefore important to study the different parenting styles and ascertain how they determine the self-concept of the individual adolescent. It is also necessary to look at the way, this will help the individual to adjust emotionally to the society.

According to Bornstain [2005], the key functions of a child’s family are to raise the young person in a healthy as manner as possible. The parents role is to provide the child with safe, secure, nurturing, loving as well support the child’s environment, as one that allows the offspring to have a happy and healthy youth life. This sort of experience allows the youth to develop in knowledge, value, attitude and behaviour necessary to become an adult, making a productive contribution to self, family community and the larger society. What a parent does to fulfill these “duties” or roles is termed parenting in other words, parenting is a term summarizes behaviour of a person, usually mother or father in the process of raising a child given to the family.

The effects of poor parents on the academic performance of their children is absolutely essential in student’s achievement in school and in life. The overwhelming studies and research indicate that there are positive academic outcomes stemming from parental involvement with benefits beginning in early childhood throughout adolescence and beyond. The impact that parents can have on their children learning and achievement transcends income levels and social status. Infact the most accurate predictor of a student achievement in school is not income or social status, but the extent to which that students family is able to;

  1. Create a home environment that encourages learning.
  2. Express high expectations for their children’s achievement and future careers.
  3. Become involved in their children’s education at school and in the community. If two of these three criteria are accomplished, children of low income families will achieve at or above the levels expected of middle class children.

A child’s learning is enhanced when schools encourage parents to stimulate their children’s intellectual development. Numerous studies have shown that the home environment has a powerful effect on what children and youth learn, not only in school but also outside of school. This environment is considerably more powerful than the parent’s income and education in influencing what children learn in the first six years of life and during the twelve year of primary and secondary education. One major reason that parental influence is so strong is because the children spend more than ninety percent of their time from infancy throughout their childhood outside school under the influence of their parents. Therefore, ultimately the parents are the first and most important teacher.

Domina and Knipprath (2005) highlighted the fact that students value their education when they see the interest shown by their parents. This does not only lead to higher academic performance, but also to better attendance and improved behaviour at home and school, when school and home work together collaboratively, and using a competent approach to education, it can make a huge difference in a student achievement academically.

Education is the greatest tool or instrument for the political, socio-economic and cultural determination of man from the path of ignorance.  The benefit of education in the over all development of Nigeria through the inculcation of desirable knowledge and wisdom to the citizens, can never be over emphasized. Thus, the development of education would ensure the dignity of labour in the youths by being interested in craftsmanship. This measure would inevitably result to a greater level of socio-political development; economic reconstruction and technological improvement.

The national policy on Education which came as a result of Nigeria effort to formulate a desirable education basic philosophy would indeed make the nation a self-reliant economy and thereby focus attention on the inclination of national consciousness, unity in diversity and the acquisition of appropriate knowledge, abilities, skills and competences for self-reliance whether at individual or national level. The greatest tool or instrument for the political, socio-economic and cultural determination of man from the path of ignorance.
