CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

There have been several criticisms about Nigerian education, among which, according to Mba (2005), is its failure to take account of individual differences among learners into consideration. The need to consider individual differences is not unconnected with the fact that children do not develop the same way. For instance, while some may be tall and thin, others may be short and fat. These and many others are just examples of differences in children’s physical development. There are also some differences in intelligence, emotional, maturity and social development among children. Thus, we have the hearing impaired children, the learning disabled, the gifted, the talented, the mentally retarded and host of others. These children and youths with variations in their total development are those for with special education is meant to take care of. According to Osakwe (2010), the school systems now face increasing pressure to raise standards, develop social and personal skills, broaden curricula, pay greater attention to equal educational opportunities and prepare young people for rapidly changing world. Invariably, the modern trend all over the world is shifting towards addressing the educational plights of students with one form of disabilities or the other so as to better their life. The rationale behind this is contingent upon the fact that people with disabilities too have invaluable roles to play in national development, and to be able to do this effectively and meaningfully, their education needs to be given proper attention. This paper therefore sets out to explore some of the challenges facing the education of students with disabilities as well as the policy implications these challenges have towards improving the lives of students with disabilities.

The handicapped children are gifted children who have ability to be educated irrespective of their disabilities, like the deaf, the blind, the dumb, lame etc. therefore, the handicapped children in Nigeria posses the talents and all the aggregate of learning just like their counter parts at school. Education which is a life provided for every individual, the physically handicapped inclusive. The team can be viewed in many ways mainly psychological and maladjustment.

An handicapped child is a child that lacks something that made him/her incapable of living like other children, it could be the hands, legs, eyes, ear etc in everyday life, the term handicap is often used to signify a physical defect, limb, paralysis, partial or total blindness etc. all these features renders the child incapable of living in quite same ways as the normally endowed.

The term handicapped, when used in a wider sense, include intellectual disabilities and disadvantages which are cause learning hardship. In the light of the above discussion, the study will look into the various learning hardship likely to be faced by the handicapped child in school. Previous researchers have revealed that behaviours are judged in terms of the society existing standards, therefore the ability of the handicapped can be under estimated by their teacher because already they are termed that they cannot perform as well as the naturally endowed pupils/students. This study will examine the various problems facing the education of the handicaps ones.

Previous researches have revealed that behaviour are judged in terms of the society, existing standard, therefore, the ability of the handicapped can be under estimated by their teacher because already they are termed or called “special children” many assumed that they cannot perform as well as the naturally endowed pupils/students. Some children are physically handicapped from birth, other develop infirmities after accidents there are other children, who may not have any physical abnormalities, but they might be abnormally short, fat with jutting teeth, small and sunken eyes and several such features.

According to Kirt (1976) physical handicapped child have problem of coordination, perception and cognition (as well as mobility resulting from lack of proper development of, or injury to the central nervous system. A lot of children that exhibit one or a combination of these impairment go through the regular school programmes undetected and unassisted, as such they fail to receive special educational attention.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

This study is to assess the problem of the handicapped children and pupils in school in Benin City.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

To identify the handicapped condition that is suitable for learning.

To consider the effects of the physically handicapped on the career of the physically handicapped students.

To correct the general belief of people that handicapped students cannot contribute significantly to the society.

To assess the problems of the handicapped students in school in Benin City and Edo State in general.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. Does being handicapped affect students performance in learning?
  2. Are the special problems that prevent the handicapped students from performing effectively in learning?
  3. Is it possible for handicaps to take part in learning activities like other normal students?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

At the end of this study, the physically challenged students/pupils has to be greatly improve than of the normal students/pupils.

It is also the responsibilities of teacher to the handicapped student/pupil has to be greatly improved and need extra attention in order to be successful. And they need special attention from their teachers before they can learn effectively, and also hoped that there are no special problems that can prevent the handicapped students not to learn.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The investigation embraces only one type of handicapped condition which is the physically deformed. This study will be carried out in school with handicapped children in two Local Government Area (LGA) in Benin City.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In the past, marriage was a matter within the clan and its environs, parents were not anxious to see their getting married to girls from distance places or other tribes., marriage was arranged by parents on basic of family friendship[ scarcely of an ancient time, it was also very rate because of its penalties proven in fear of offending the elders of both families. There are four clearly defined types of marriages. Those performed at the church, those performed at the mosque are marriages contracted according to native law and customs of any ethnic group. The purpose of marriage is to have children and establish a family, when these children eventually arrive they are regarded as blessing from God and are social and economic assets to the parents. The family, this needs a home to live and feel secured. Therefore, a home is a place where a family lives and also a place where the children’s attitude are monitored and be secured.

A home is palce which provides all individual needs in order to fit into the society successfully. It provides food, psychological, mentally and spiritual development of its members. A home provides mutual understanding and good planning which is able to meet its goals. A home where mutual understanding is lacking that home is bound crack and fissure in all direction and it will lead to broken homes. Therefore, broken homes is a situation where either the father or the mother cease to be mention but a few.

Divorce therefore, can be defined to be a personal misfortune for either of the spouse in any society, but is a universal escape for the inevitable tension of marriage, divorce as a matter of fact is a strong bound that breach two united individual or family. Marriage is a big step in life in which a person plans as a career or business, certainly you either fail or succeed. This bond dissolution is as a result of extra merit practiced by the partners in early marriage, a situation where either the spouse is not ripe enough for marriage before getting married. The proper upbringing of children is a very important task for the family than the happiness of the parents, this is because the early life of the child are the formation of personality and these are the years that are spent mainly in association with parents and siblings in the family. The home forms the basis of personality development which accompanies the individual throughout his/her life. As a result of broken home or divorce children fails to develop ties to one or few important persons in the family and when these ties are disrupted, the children are taught imparted in developing classes relationship in adulthood, they feel better and caring as a happy person and at the same cannot concentrate on anything taught at school.

When a mother is out of a home, leaving the children under charity and mercy of step mothers, these children are prone to many problems such as poor feed, negligence not inspired to study or learn, diseases and sickness emotional disturbances (fear of insecurity) as such they marriage to be successful. There is the need for the couples to be in harmony mentally, and spiritually in other works of life, the husband and the wife must have a common goal and each has to contribute his or her quota towards its fulfillment and the key ward should be own.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

There are many problems with single parenting or broken homes which at the long run reflect on the performance of children in schools. Some of these problems are;

i.             Meeting of a gap on the children’s existence because there is no adult to guide and direct their behavior and desires as children learn by imitation.

ii.            There is increase in domestic work and redistribution of household chores, which leaves the children with little or no time for their studies

iii.          Also, it has been observed that children from broken homes suffer some other problems such as non-provision of some basic material needs like non-provision of some basic materials needs like food, clothing and learning material

iv.          In security, step parent do not show much love and affection to their step children. Thus, these children suffer from mental retardation, personality improvement and are always miserable. They show behavioral responses like lying, stealing, building and playing truant in school.

In view of this, the researcher is forced to wonder whether extra-relationship and financial problem could lead to broken home, and if broken homes, are they causes of decrease in the performance of children in schools. In that, a closer look at the turn out of secondary school graduates.

PURPOSE OF STUDY

With good observation, one can trace the good academic performance of children back to their parental influence which can be destabilized if parents relationship is dead due to divorced marriage, so it is the purpose of this research to investigate the effect of divorce on child education in school and provide possible solution to them.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1.                  Is there any significant difference between united family and family with divorced marriage?

2.                  Are there any significant difference between children sponsored by single parenthood and those sponsored by both parents in terms of their academic performance in school?

3.                  Is there any a significant cause or effect on child education?

4.                  Do children from broken homes opportune to plan their future career with their sponsors?

5.                  Does lack of encouragement on the part of step parents contribute to academic backwardness of the student?

6.                  Is there any effect made by the society and the government to solve this problem?

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

It is hoped that findings from this study will enrich programmes of teaching social studies. The researcher is interested in the study of effect of single parenting on the performance of children in schools because whatever happens in the home has a bearing in the academic performance of children. It is necessary to educate the young stars who are yet unmarried about the problems and causes of single parenting and their consequences on the children. It will also make young stars to decimate their parents. Findings from this study will aid children from parent who have being thought single parenting in the understanding of problem experienced by their parents and give them assurance about their future.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION1.1    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The rate at which unemployed N.C.E. graduates roam the street in Edo State without a job has begun to draw the attention of both government and public individuals. It is important to know the meaning of the “unemployment” in order to fully understand the causes and effect. According to Ihingan (1980), unemployment is spreading with urbanization and education. But the industrial sector has failed to expand along the growth of labour force thereby increasing urban unemployment. He went further to say that there are educated unemployed graduates who fail to get jobs due to structural rigidities and lack of entrepreneurial skills.

A person is s aid to be unemployed if in spite of his willingness and capacity to work, he cannot do owing to reasons inherent in organization of commodity product. This is a state of affairs in the labour market where the supply of labour is greater than the available resources.

According to Harvey (1985), unemployment exists when people are capable and willing to work but not able to find suitable paid employment. The problems of unemployment date back to the year 1930, even before the great world economic depression. In Nigeria, specifically Edo State by the year 1960, school leavers secured jobs with relative eased, skilled labour especially NCE graduates was scarce and difficult to come by and it was the employers who looked for them. However, it must be emphasized that this research is concerned with unemployable frictional unemployment, as it relates to unemployed NCE graduates n Edo State.

1.2    STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

a).    Unemployment is on the increase

b).    Many NCE graduates are unemployed

c).    There is mass production of NCE graduates who do not have relevant skills.

1.3    OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objectives of the study are to:

1.           Examine the cause and nature of unemployment among N.C.E. graduates

2.           Examine the effects of unemployment on N.C.E. holders in Edo State

3.           Recommend possible solutions to the identified problems of unemployment among this group of graduates, which can aid in reducing the effects.

1.4       RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1.

2.                  What are the problems encountered as a result of being unemployed?

3.                  Does unemployment lead to health problems?

1.5    SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of this project work focuses on the causes and effects of unemployment of NCE graduates in the College of Education, Ekiadolor-Benin.

1.7    SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This research was will be useful to the federal government, local government, tertiary institutions, students and general public. Since the causes and effect of unemployment has been identified and enumerated, it is hoped that the state government will undoubtedly tackle it and accelerate economic development in the Edo State.

ABSTRACT

The problems associated with teaching and learning mathematics is of great concern to mathematics educators and mathematicians. However in all the states in Nigeria including Edo State, teaching and learning of mathematics have not been without problem. For some time now, there has been public outcry over the poor state in teaching and learning generally and mathematics to be specific. This reflected in the poor achievement especially in mathematics in the Senior School Certificate Examination. The yearly result in the ordinary level examination in mathematics obviously indicated low numbers of credit passes. The motivation of this study aroused when considering all these. The study sought to explain the problems associated with teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools. The poor performance of students in mathematics in secondary schools has generated a lot of heat on the educational system. It was in consideration of this issue that the motivation of this study aroused. The study focused on the problems of teaching and learning mathematics is mostly associated with the teachers under qualification and in-experience in mathematics. However, the researcher recommended that the government and school authorities should employ more qualified mathematics teachers and organize seminars, workshops or conferences and in-service training to upgrade the practicing ones. The official of government agency incharge of secondary school education should faithfully implement the budget to reflect the purpose of the budgeting in our school system.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

It is widely believed that mathematics is very important to the economic, scientific and political development of any nation. It is because of this common phenomenon that made every nation in the world to make mathematics a compulsory subject in every aspect of educational system.

The principles of mathematics are generally understood at an early age. When missed, it give birth to anxiety which includes a feelings of tension, apprehension or fear that interferes with mathematics performance. Mathematics anxiety is a phenomenon that cuts across some students in secondary schools because they tend to miss its principles.

Umionyang (1997), referred to mathematics as the foundation for science without which a nation can never be prosperous and economically independent. He further noted that competence in mathematics provides many of the opportunity for personnel required by industry, science, technology and education. Considering the contributions of mathematics to the contemporary world, one would have expected mounting interest on it as a discipline that is truly the language of science and technology but the reverse seems to be the case.

From a personal study carried out, there is poor performance in mathematics examinations. It is ironical that in our pre-science and technologically-oriented world, the youths who would have taken charge of global affairs in the future; the running of industries and the means of production, research laboratories, space technology and international politics are shying away from the very subject that should have adequately prepare them for such roles. The student’s flight in the secondary school is very alarming.

We are cognizant of the historical facts that the old indigenous cultures were pacesetters in mathematics and subsequently, made notable scientific discoveries. In Nigeria and Edo State in particular, the students performance in mathematics in secondary schools has continuously reflected poor performance over the years and this perhaps, could be attributed to the various problems associated with the teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools,

According to Uwadiae (2009) quoted in punch newspaper, 2009 that seventy seven percent (77%) of the candidates who sat for 2008 West African School Certificate Examination failed to get credit in mathematics. In view of this National challenge, this study sought to find out what could have influenced the problem, since mathematics was introduced into the syllabus with proper study, so many problems have been confronting effective teaching and learning of mathematics like

  1. The attitude of students towards the learning of mathematics.
  2. Unqualified teachers or using non- mathematics specialists to teach the subject in some Nigeria schools.
  3. Lack of learning facilities e.g. mathematics laboratories in school.
  4. Lack of appropriate method of teaching mathematics.
  5. Overcrowding of mathematics syllabus.

The problems associated with teaching and learning of mathematics is seen from the lukewarm attitudes of some mathematics teachers and their ineffectiveness in mathematics education. Lack of student-teacher relationship has also been seen in the environment in which teaching and learning is conducted.

Teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools is very essential, no doubt because, it is regarded as a yardstick in the development of any nation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The importance of mathematics to the world and to a nation’s technology breakthrough has been highlighted in the foregone section. This has been the reason why mathematics is given prominence in the school curriculum and timetable. However, in Edo State, the teaching and learning of mathematics have not been without problems. For some time now, there has been a growing concern over the poor teaching and learning of mathematics with the resultant [poor and falling standard in secondary schools’ student performance in mathematics. The West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination and other related examination body recognized in Nigeria have always indicated decrease in number of passes.

In addition, students are likely to attend schools that are poorly constructed with inadequate teaching and learning facilities. The curriculum with an overcrowded syllabus. Most mathematics teachers lack teaching affective characteristic and insufficient teacher training program. On the side of students, is loss of interest in learning mathematics and the teachers not showing enough motivation to arouse student’s interest in learning mathematics?

To what extent would all these problems of teaching and learning mathematics affect student performance in mathematics education? All these prompted the researcher to identify problems of teaching and learning of mathematics in some selected schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to find out the problems of teaching and learning of mathematics in Nigerian schools by considering;

  1. The qualities of teachers teaching mathematics in Nigeria schools.
  2. The activities of students toward learning of mathematics in Nigeria schools.
  3. The factors militating against effective utilization of available instructional materials in the teaching and learning of mathematics.

It is the intention of the researcher to study the problems associated with the teaching mathematics in addition, the reasons behind the students’ failure of mathematics and lack of interest in the subject will be elucidated upon during the course of this research work.

1.4    Significance of the Study

The need for this research is to elicit useful information that could be the problems associated with teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools. Not until useful ideas to the problems militating against mathematics education is unraveled, through a research of this kind, we will not be able to suggest useful and workable solutions to the problems.

The research will be of help to policy makers in education, in review of curriculum development and implementation, proper repositioning of teacher training program and also be of help to teachers as it will expose areas where the teachers need to put more efforts in the teaching of mathematics. It will further help teachers in employing better techniques and methods of teaching to the best understanding of the students. In addition, the findings of this research will help students concerned to appreciate the subject mathematics, expose the importance of mathematics, the wonders, fun and happiness it gives thereby encouraging them to put in more effort and to remove every negative sentiments, and fear students have towards the study of mathematics.

The study is an eye opener to the general public in making people see the usefulness of mathematics in day to day activities and the indispensible contribution of mathematics in nation building. It makes the society have a grasp of their action and inaction towards mathematical education.

1.5    Scope of the Study

This study is a quantitative survey that will cover five secondary schools selected in Ovia north East Local Government Area of Edo State. ABSTRACT

The competitive environment in which college libraries operate and provide their services and resources is one of the biggest challenges to engage today’s students. There is a limited amount of high quality attention and time students have to be able to be engaged with what the library offers them. Planning and designing library awareness and information’s, literacy programs, particularly for new students has presented itself as an on-going challenge for librarians world wide in recent times. However, the goalpost keeps on moving and the players are becoming more restless, demanding and seeking instant gratification. The purpose of this research work is to present the findings of a study that examines attitudes of students towards the use of library facilities students take a compulsory introduction to subject during their first semester taught by both internal and external experts on a wide range of topics including journey of information presented by library staff. The library is also involved in the subsequent delivery of information literacy programs throughout students educational programs in an ongoing  effort to engage them and to get them involved in university wide activities. The majority of new students spend up to a year undertaking intensive English preparatory classes. The curriculum for the English as a second language program includes a learning portfolio linking various levels of English competency with each other pre-intermediate, intermediate etc to ensure students complete the program not only with sufficient English language competency but also with information and life skills to help them throughout their studies and beyond. The research will examine what impact the library efforts to engage students in library and information use and their learning and research has had by understanding their pre-university experience, expectations and knowledge and skills about libraries and information use.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The academic libraries have been described as the “heart” of the learning community providing a place for students and faculty to conduct their research and advance their knowledge. In the education system, an academic library is the centre of academic life. A university library or any library attached to an institution of higher education exists to support the goal of its parent organization, since university libraries are an integral part of the higher education system, they should provide support services for the formal educational programs as well as for facilities for research and for generation of new knowledge. It is important of any information professional working in an academic or any other library to know the real needs of the user community.

Understanding the needs of the target group will help to develop the diverse strategies that are appropriate to obtain effective results. Since the university library is committed to provide excellent resources and services, it has to develop an ongoing dialog with its user community. On the other hand academic libraries have to improve the quality of their service to survive in this volatile competitive environment. Therefore it is crucial to evaluate the library service from customer’s point of view at the same time order to set up user-centered service, the library needs to know the user and user needs. One of the main tools that can be used to evaluate and assess the library services is the user survey. It is impossible to assess the changing needs of the clientele unless user surveys are conducted to determine user needs and their reading interests.

A library, strives to play a leading role in the teaching, learning and research activities of its parents institution, it should be aggressively dynamics in the provision of its services and manned by personnel of the highest quality, who possess adequate background, appropriate professional training and experience and the proper orientation to meet the challenges of modern university academic, use expectation from any information system is to make available directly or remotely and in real time the needed information, formal notwithstanding, in the university environment the library a major information providing system support’s teaching learning and research with information materials of various types (Anunobi and Edoka 2010).

The advents of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have however drastically changed the nature of traditional library services. Perhaps in any discussion of application of modern technology in the library, as revealed by Ukoh (1984) the first thing that comes to mind is the computer, the computer has made such a tremendous impact on the organization management and dissemination of information that it readily commends itself to any library ready to accept it when computers first made their impact on libraries especially with the automation of house-keeping routines, recourse managers had expected financial savings as machine took over the work of human. However, in higher education, the real result has been that automation has enable institutions to cope with great increases in demand without increases in staffing and how they are able to provide a much wider ranges of services, to improve the quality of work performed by students, simultaneously saving them time when searching for information.

Computers in libraries have proved useful in assisting the information processing aspect of traditional library, operations like acquisitions, registration of readers, circulation functions and keeping track of reading and research interests of user. Thus repetitive and untie data processing tasks which characterized most library, are effectively and efficiently handle by computer. The computerization of students library services brings with it many benefits meant to improve the quality of services that the library renders to its users some of the benefit of library facilities includes, enhanced productivity, increased output, more productive tasks. In documentation and information processing, network enhancement and perfect control of records management and retrieval.

The facilities of library, therefore, therefore, lead to a change in the way the library offers services to its clientele. Change is a natural phenomenon in growth and envelopment. Humans being are known to respond differently to changing situations thus, reflecting in their attitudes towards the object of change fear of change is similarly a natural human reaction every human being develops control over familiar situations and in most cases, feels comfortable with the familiar than the unfamiliar.

A computerized library comprises not only facilities and formats’ but cuso the essential human elements users and staff, the success of any library system, after all, rests not on how well the design work on paper in abstract, but on how effectively they can use it. And it is the users of the library that embrace or reject the new technologies, fulfill or frustrate, the intentions of sys1tem designers and experience anxiety and disorientation, as a result of their use attitudes are ending patterns of belief, believed to be predictive of behaviour reflecting people’s biases inclination or tendencies that influence their response to situation, activities, people or programme goals. Students varied in their information needs and their seeking attitudes, they constitute a part of society who is fortunate to have access at little or no cost themselves a variety of computerized services in their institutions library. This is made possible because universities use considerable proportions of their budgets to provide these technologies for their students to assists in the teaching, learning and research processes. One of the major barriers is implementing new innovation in libraries is only technical but also attitudinal as positive attitude towards; technology contributes to the better performance in a technologically advanced environment. However, little is known about student’s attitude towards computerized services in their institution libraries and without a better understanding, it remains difficult for these libraries to effectively provide these service5s for their users.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The use of library facilities cut’s across all professions in any society. Awareness of the need for the use of libraries facilities has become very popular. In the library, a computerized cataloguing system enable the use of centrally produce bibliographic records other such services offered to users in library include e.mails, online database/electronic journal access co-nontechnology and OPAC .

The role of the information  providers to understand, the need of the users their attitudes towards seeking their needs only then can users optimize the benefits that such services tend to offers.

However, not much is known about the attitudes of students of College of Education Ekiadolor towards the facilities in the institutions library, it therefore becomes imperative to take closer look at those attitudes, which have an effect on how students make use of the facilities and will in turn affect the overall success of the library’s facilities and programme.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is described by Cullen (2001) in the following terms.

  • Provide detailed information about user’s opinion of the library services.
  • Help to certify the librarians concepts of the services as their assumption about the user needs.
  • Indicate problem
  • Suggest solution

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main objectives of the user survey were

  1. To learn what library services, resources and facilities undergraduates use of their learning and research.
  2. To know how satisfied students are with available resources and services in the library.
  3. Examine the student’s attitude toward computerized library services.
  4. Find out the term of provision of the services to the library users.
  5. Find all the hindrances to the use of the services in the library and how such could be curbed.
  6. To suggest remedies that may help the undergraduates to use the library more effectively.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. Is there any difference between library facilities and the academic performance of students?
  2. Does students satisfaction in the available resou9rces and service produced in library?
  3. Does students develop positive attitude towards the use of library?
  4. Does a barrier discourage students from use of library?
  5. Does a library user require any particular skill to be use library facilities?

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The limitation I have in carrying out this study are too numerous in the course of carrying out this project work. A lot of human defines came to play outstand in among this short comings were financial constrains which in all practical terms affects the investigations process so also was time constrain which was heightened by the fact that the researcher has to told fast to her academics while carrying out the study in the same vein, the researcher found it very difficult locating recent materials, which were mainly textbooks which would have the investigation more currents.
