CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Career selection is one of the main important choice in students plans. This choice of decision will have impact on them throughout their lives. The essence of who the students are, will revolve around what the students wants to do with his or her greatest blessings. Everyone is always eager to have honest occupation. The way the students perceive their environment for example, students who have hired on an island may choose a career dealing with water or they may choose to leave the island behind and never to have any thing to do with water again.

Parents’ educational and occupational background may affect students choice of career because some students may contemplate on whether to continue with their parents occupation or not. What the students see in the television also may affect their career choice some careers demand that you have the personality to match the qualities of the occupation. For these reasons the necessity of a guidance counsellor on schools cannot be over emphasized. A career guidance counsellor is needed to unreliable and dangerous source in search of career information such as culture peer groups which can lead to their graduating into armed robbery and other criminal business unintentionally. This study will be carried out in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State will be useful to the guidance counsellors in assisting senior students in their career also help the ministry of education in curriculum planning to widen the students career choice opportunities through curriculum content of educational system.

Tuche (2002) is right in suggesting that the students should think of their career in senior secondary schools in so doing they need career guidance. Ipaye (1983) refers to the need for one to discuss with one peers, school counsellors, parents and teachers on the need to choose a life span work as “career convention or career conferences”. However, career convention according to him is an instrument of career information. This occur for a number of reasons, which include the following:

a.            To stimulate career thinking and widen occupational horizon.

b.            To focus attention on particular jobs in other to help an individual crystallize his preference and

c.            To create a situation in which parents can on one hand meet the employers and discuss the opportunities they offer and on other hand meet the career teachers or career officers with whom they can exchange views.

The factors that may influence choice of career includes:

i.             Socio economic factors

ii.            Personal or family factors

iii.           Cultural factors which include schools, peer group and age groups.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1.            What are the possible causes or factors affecting the choice of career among secondary school students in Esan North East local government area of Edo State?

2.            How significant has this contribution been over the years?

3.            To what extent has private sectors investment actually affected the choice of career among secondary school students.

4.            What is actually the contribution of both private and public secondary schools on the choice of career of secondary school students?

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1.            Is there any need for learning career choice in senior secondary school?

2.            If there is reasons for reading career choice in schools, is it of benefit to the students?

3.            How does career choice affect the academic performance of students?

4.            Does student’s choice of career influence by their peer group?

5.            What are the factors responsible for a student’s wrong choice of career?

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The main purpose of the study is an attempt to examine the factors affecting the choice of career among secondary school students in Esan North East local government area of Edo State. CHAPTER ONE

1.0         INTRODUCTION

In the part, there has been a great set back between the developing nations of the world in general and Nigeria in particular regarding the need for industrialization. Therefore much emphasis has been laid on the teaching of computer science from primary school level which is seen as a basic necessity of the dreams of industrialization are ever to come true. In Nigeria, the adoption of 60% to 40% ratio policy in admission of students into the secondary schools in a step considered imperative if the country must develop technologically. However, computer science as a field of study has existed unknowingly among us many years before the introduction formal education in Nigeria but only popularized just in the recent past with the arrival of western educationist.

Our fore-father never saw the four walls of the classrooms nor attended any schools, they were actually making use of tools in their daily activities. The situation is not different from what we have today expect with little modification for example, our fore-father were able to produce cutlasses, holes and knives which were used to cut grasses, make ridges and other things, like the use of stones and their hands to count money and also brain to solve calculations like addition, subtraction, division and multiplication. Computer science has a lot of abstraction and also has strong base in our culture. If it is properly taught and adopted, its application will become part and parcel of our every day life activities.

1.1             BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Computer science plays an important role in the life of every mankind. The government desire to create a scientifically literate citizenry as well as the need to effectively make her industries with the much needed man power, required the need for total reevaluation and improvement of the method used in teaching computer science. This will enhance the comprehension and to some extent stimulate interest in the natural and physical sciences which forms the basis for much technological transfer. The use of integrated computer science resource materials will appeal to their senses and feelings and consequently, aids learning. Resources materials provide effective means of learning especially when the teacher skillfully integrate them during teaching processes, they serve as aids meaningful instructions.

As teachers we need to understand the students who receive educational instructions from us, we need to study all the factors affecting the pupils before we can properly assess the performance level of students in any subject. Research findings have shown that students’ performance in computer science and integrated science or any other subject is generally poor over the years. (Fakuade, 1976 and Egbede 1993). This may not be due to a number of courses, it may be due to lack of equipments and facilities in the schools. Lack of qualifies and experience teacher, Unfavorable atmosphere, lack of space, frequent change of schools by children etc. it may be pertinent to note that majority of the students, primary and secondary school have different level of performance in computer science.

According to T. S. Bajah 1970 and Farnant J. A. 1964, these educationist prove that education is child centred and that the aim of education is to develop the child in all areas of human endeavors of which computer science is all. The importance of the child and computer science in modern educational system is very relevant. Nigeria today is referred to as developing country because of its low level of technology advancement. It is therefore a well-known fact that Nigeria requires solid foundations in computer science subjects in order to develop her technologies. The manufacturing of hardware and sophisticated materials which make many countries developed and industrialized were only possible through a proper acquisition of the basic knowledge of computer science.

1.2             STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The best place to establish computer science culture is the formative years of primary school. Meaningful teaching and learning in this state requires concrete examples, which are likely to be absent in most schools. It is in this regard that researcher intend to find out the relationship between availability and the use of instructional materials and the students performance in computer science in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State and then suggest ways of encouraging children, teachers, and administrators to pay more attention to the use of instructional materials in order to improve the performance level in computer science in primary schools. Consequently, this study will consider the following areas:

1.                Lack of sufficiency in the number of manpower specifically trained to teach computer science in these primary schools.

2.                Availability and use of improvised materials in the teaching of computer science in the primary school.

3.                The level of state and local government commitment to the acquisition of basic primary school computer science equipment requisite for the effective teaching of computer science in these schools.

4.                Lack of interest on the part of the teachers

5.                The interest of the student in computer science.

1.3             PURPOSE OF STUDY

This study is to determine the relationship between availability and the use of instructional materials and students’ performance in the teaching and learning of computer science and also suggest ways to improve the students’ performance

1.4             RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Having identified the problem of the study, in order to give directives to this work, some research questions were formulated. They are stated as follows:

1.    What are the effect of non availability of instructional materials? it leads to

a.    The failure of pupils

b.    The poor performance of pupils

c.    Lack of understanding of the subject.

2.    Is there an instructional material? How is it used? It is poorly use.

3.    Does the use of instructional materials enhance effective teaching and learning of computer science?

4.    Is there computer science equipment and laboratory?

5.    Does pupils’ background affect the use of resource materials in the schools?

1.5             SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Some of the benefits that will be derived from this study are highlighted as follows:

1.                The study will aid teachers in the use of instructional materials to facilitate the teaching and learning of computer science.

2.                To determine students attitude towards computer science subject.

3.                To crate awareness of the importance of instructional materials.

4.                To ascertain the level of students performance in computer science.

5.                The study will draw the attention of government, voluntary agencies, PTA and community to improving better use of instructional materials to sustain the teaching of the subject.

6.                The analysis and results to these problems will enable curriculum planner of computer science to improve or draw up a better curriculum to suit the need of the pupils.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

This work provides the overview of the major underlying causes of secondary school dropout and its effects in some selected secondary school in Ovia North East local government area of Edo State, Nigeria. The subject is directly related to two benchmarks being addressed by many of Georgia’s country collaborative increase the percentage of students who graduates from school on time’ and “reduce the percentage of students absent 10 days or more from school annually”. The hope is that by understanding the underlying root causes of dropout in secondary schools and its key component a collaborative can examine relevant data for their local community and develop a comprehensive strategy that produces results.

In the ancient time, we have formal or traditional educational system which Nigerian’s or indigenous people used to educate their own children this is what has been called occupational education before the coming of the Europeans and their western education to Nigeria.

The purpose of this type of education was to make the young ones grow up in such a way that, they will understand the society into which they were born, acquired the knowledge, skill understand the attitude and appreciate the culture.  However the general education sill have area of specialization which includes palm fruit, packing hunting, carpentering, etc.

As a result of the missionary activities in Nigeria, a formal type of education was established with the aim of training people who can read, understand and interpret the bible.  The aim also was to produce people who would be of service too the member of the trinity of colonialism and church.  The white-collar jobs which the formal education provided, made many citizen to attend schools, some of them did not complete their educational career due to economics, social and physical handicaps that will be exhaustively dealt with in subsequent chapters.

Every year a great number of students dropout of school due to some factors such as ill health, attitude of teacher and peer group influence. Those who drooped out of school constitute nuisance in the society. They can either be found roaming in the street or seeking for opportunity to steal. However a lot of these dropouts involves themselves in crimes and eventually end up in prison and in extreme cases executed for armed robbery offence.

The Georgia Academy defines school dropout as situation whereby students leaves school for one reason or the other without graduating, this bring a threat to him or her. Georgia academy believes that school is the right of every child even those in the rural areas of the localities. Since the mid 20th century many countries have discarded their previous selective schools systems, in which students early on were separated between academic and vocational tracks, in favour of more comprehensive schools. The effect of those reforms have generally been difficult to evaluate and their consequences for students educational and labor market outcomes remains disputed.

This work evaluates the effects of the introduction of a more comprehensive secondary school system in Nigeria in the 1990s. The reform reduced the differences between the academic and vocational educational tracks through prolonging and substantially increasing the academic content of all vocational tracks. The effect of this policy change are identified by exploiting a six year pilot scheme, which proceeded the actual reform in some municipalities. The result shows that the prolongation of the vocational tracks brought about an increased probability of dropping out of school among low performing students. Though one important motive behind the policy change was to enable all secondary schools graduates to pursue a university degree.

I find no effect on university enrolment or graduation. There are some indications, however, that attending the longer and more academic vocational track may have led to increase earning in the long run. The Georgia sees the following as some of the causes of dropouts in secondary schools.

Disabilities – students with disabilities are also more likely to dropout. The national transition study estimates that as many as 36.4% of disabled youths dropout before completing a diploma or certificate course.

Occupation aspiration – young people in the locality perceptions of the economic opportunities available to them also play a role in their decision to dropout of or stay in school. Dropouts often have lower occupational aspirations than their peers. Young people give these reasons for dropping out of school. According to a National Longitudinal study conducted by the United State department of education statistics three (3) here is a summary of the key reason why students dropped out.

a.           School related

i.             Did not like school

ii.            Could not get along with teachers

iii.           Was falling school

b.            Job related

i.             Could not work and go to school the same time.

ii.            Had to get a job

iii.           Found a job

c.           Family related

i.             Was pregnant

ii.            Became parent

iii.           Got married

The effects of dropping out of school in recent years, advances in technology, have fueled the demand for a highly skilled labour force, transforming a secondary school education into a minimum requirement for entry into the labour market.

Because secondary school completion has become a basic prerequisite for many entry-levels jobs, as well as secondary education, the economic consequences of leaving secondary school without a diploma are severe.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

In carrying out this study, it is necessary to identify the possible causes and effect of school dropout in Ovia North East Local Government Area. They include the following: –

1.           Financial problem could hamper schooling.

2.           Loss of parents or sponsor could hinder school

3.           Unhealthy human relationships in school, quarrel, hatred, fighting etc can cause dropout in secondary school.

4.           Low mental ability can make a student to dropout of school.

5.           Academic factors: National research also indicates that academic factors are clearly related to dropping out. Students who receive poor grades, who repeat a grade or who are average for their class are likely to dropout.

6.           Students who have poor attendance for reasons other than illness are more likely to drop out of school.

7.           Young people in the locality perception of the economic opportunities available to them also play a role in the decision to dropout of school.

PURPOSE OF STUDY

The purpose of this study is to find out the causes and effects of school dropout in the locality.

The researcher wants to know the problem face by students in secondary school, which lead to dropout.

Also the researcher wants to know the effects of these dropouts in the society or locality.

The researcher also wants to know the causes of these problems that are faced by students, which leads to their dropout from secondary schools.

The researcher wants to find solution to the problems of school dropout in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo state.

RESEARCH QUESTION

To provide solution to the stated problem, the following research questions, were put forward:

1.           Do students dropout because of financial problem to meet their basic needs?

2.           Does broken home cause students to dropout of students from school?

3.           Does poor students and teacher’s relationship cause school dropout?

4.           To what extent does participation in secret cults cause dropout in secondary school?

5.           Does race-ethnicity bring about dropout in secondary schools?

6.           Does early marriages causes dropout in secondary schools.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of this study is that, it will help us to produce manpower needed in our society and also how to minimize the causes and effect of dropout in secondary school. Also to provide solutions to these problems and look for ways to eradicate the problems of dropout in these secondary schools. This is done through the creation of awareness and letting the students to be informed at the right time or given the right information will go along way to reduce or even eradicate dropout in secondary schools.

ABSTRACT

Environment is man’s immediate surrounding and man in his exploration and innovation has always been tempering with his/her environment there by causing harm to the environment in his causes to making life easy and meaningful for its existence such as the exploration of crude oil, gold mining and other natural minerals in his environment, which in turns creates danger to live stocks and crops during exploration, mining and excavation. This researcher has taken it upon himself to know what the necessary compensations are due to the inhabitants living in that society if any, and if the compensation are really measurable enough to elevate the standard of living of the dwellers in that society if any, and if the compensations are really measurable enough to elevate the standard of living of the dwellers in that locality the necessary rules, laws and penalties stipulated for defaulters who refuse to pay or make the necessary implementations for such cases, and what the government of the federal republic of Nigeria has in her constitution about the environment and there that are alleged to be degrading this environment with their industries.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0         THE NATURE OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION

History and science both seemed to agree that before the advent of man, the environment already existed, and it’s therefore logical to rationalize that the environment proceeded man’s human technologies and scientific development. It’s rightly by who postulated that this environment before the advent of man was pure and inspolled as was discerned from biblical records, when God created the sun total of what was conceived as the environment. He saw that it was good, man therefore inherited a good environment and was constituted as a superior being to conquer all the earthly natural resources, but not to destroy, pollute or degrade the natural resources that were created for the same superior beings existed. The occurrence some natural include such as earthquakes and draught, which causes harm to natural environment, though the natural environment has inbuilt mechanism to absolve and eliminate some of the harm which originally occur in nature. The intensification of the various activities of man has caused a shift in this natural mechanism by including and increasing the rate at which these incidents occur.

The above stem from the perspective of modern environmental imprudence, its known from the beginning of mans creation, that man has been dependent on the earths ecosystem to provide him with the means of sustenance air to breath, food to eat, water to drink and other natural resources to advance quality of life. In other words, man’s basic needs are hinged upon good clothing and shelter. These are entirely derived from land for life depends on it. The principle of quid plantator solo-solo cedit, presupposes that land consist of the surface of the earth, the soil and air space above it as well as all things, which are permanently attached to the soil. And it also includes steams and ponds. Man, being owe of the most inhabitant of the world has his existence hinged on the reservoir of resources within his immediate surrounding for his own sustenance, he exploits the environment for all his needs. However, in this attempt to actualize his dreams of existence, the magnetite of his intrusion on the supporting web of the environment is generating an alarm that cannot be ignored, because very existence of man is threatened to the cord. The consequences of the above situation are the large scale degradation that has been and is still being done to the environment.

1.1                 MEANING OF ENVIRONMENT

Section 38 of the federal environment protection agency act defines environment as including water, air, land and all human beings and animals living therein and the inter-relationship which exist between them. This means in essence that life depends on the environment. Contrary to the attitude and believe of most people in developing countries that their lives or livelihood depends entirely on their immediate neighborhood. It’s now being realized that environment extends beyond peoples vicinity to another circles of the earth. It follows that environment is an umbrella word that embraces all the vital elements required for life to exist.

1.2                 CONCEPT OF ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION

In the environment, there exists a chain which comprises all the constituents in a relationship that in complex. The chain begins with the simplest elements to the most component in the environment. The activities of each of the constituent are regarded as the existence of some other fact or which ensures that a balance is maintained in the natural set up. The existence of man and his dependence on the resources in his immediate vicinity for sustenance has drawn so much from the natural store of resources that there is now an in-balance in the natural set up, and as the population of human race increases, the demands they make on the natural resources also multiply.

Thus, this results in a continuous depletion in the available resources, in the absent of adequate or considerable efforts at conservation or replacement of the stock. This exploitation of natural resources portend a bleak future for creation, yet unborn. As a matter of fact, there is no activity that is engaged in by man for his own sustenance and advancement that does not have an effect on the various interactions existing among the constituents of the environment. Environmental degradation consists essentially in pollution in all ramifications, that is, it consists of any undesirable changes in the natural characteristics of the environment or the constituent. It ranges from the waste generated and carelessly dumped by various house holds to farming operation where the natural land is destroyed and chemical such as pesticides and inorganic fertilizers are unleashed on the environment. It extends to various scientific laboratories power generating centres and industrial sites where harmful emission and waste are released into the environment. Others are construction of structures without appropriate authorization and/or compliances with health regulation, also not left out arte the various bills boards that litters and deface the natural surroundings. This bits and pieces then come together to cause gravious environment problems for the entire vicinity, state, country.

The federal environmental protection agency act (known as FEPA)33 under section 38 defined pollution as a means/meaning “manmade or man aided alteration chemical, physical ort biological quality of the environment to the extent that is detrimental to the environment or beyond acceptable limits and “pollutants” shall be constructed accordingly. Thus any undesirable alteration in the composition or states of the environment as to make it unable to satisfactorily perform its natural roles which amounts to environmental degradation. This is irrespective of whether such alteration was naturally induced or was a product of man’s creation. All that is needed is the occurrence of any state or condition in the environment that will impede it from being suitable for the purpose that it was naturally suited for whenever this situation results damage is said to have being caused to the environment.

Middlation in Atlas of environment issue oxford university press 19885 it has been reported that more than 11 million hectare of forest are destroyed every year by acid rain.

1.3                 THE SOURCES OF ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION

There are various causes of environmental degradation and damage to the natural environment. These factors that results in the destruction of the environment emanates fro the activities of nature itself, which are man, animals, and other elements that are present in the environment., however, all the factors can be broadly categorized into two namely.

1.            The natural sources

2.            the artificial sources

1.2.1    Natural Sources

The are some natural factors which on their own lead to degradation to the environment as earlier pointed. Quite often, there factors are normally taken care of by the natural environment, which provides certain safe guards to check any serious harm that may be the consequence of such activities. The incidence in the case of soil erosion, whether by rain or by wind is a natural act which occur on its own, when it occurs, there is a resultant washing away of the soil starting from the top soil, through to the subsoil. In very serious cases the whole layer of the top soil is washed away resulting in to what is known as short erosion.

No matter the type of erosion, the result is damage to the environment. However, nature has its own mechanism of controlling soil erosion and protecting the environment from damage. It ensures that its not left out bare by providing regetation, lives the soil shelter from the direct impart, plant roots holds the soil parties together to form soil aggregate, thereby improving on the soil structure which makes it, less likely for serious erosion to occur. In this way, the severity of erosion is put under control, but with continuous destruction of natural vegetation by man in his bid to satisfy his own wants, this natural protection of the soil is disappearing fast. The result has been a wide spread occurrence of soil erosion allover the world. This intern has heard the effect of causing immeasurable damages to the environment and amount others, destroying the natural landscape.

Another natural factor is the rapid desertification of the world land area. This often result in areas known as arid and semi arid zones because of the low and unreliable precipitation rate. In this place, vegetable growth in minimal as a result of low moisture that is available. Consequently, the soil is bare and dry thereby exposing it to be weather element of wind, which blooms across it unhindered. This loosen the soil particles to produce the friable (easily chattered) soil structure essentially sandy and agriculturally, useless. Dissertation is a vain enhanced by man through its activities or over growing the land, continuous tillage and deforestation, all of which only remove the vegetation cover and exposes the soil elements weather earthquakes and volcanic eruption are naturally other factors that have serious effect on the environment. Earthquakes which is the sadden violent movement of the earth surface often result in land slides occurring. This destroys the land and all that is contained in it including human lives, buildings and vegetations. It also destroys the natural topography of the land. Volcanic eruption is the emitting of some molten inorganic lava from the “belly” of the earth, which forces its way to the surface and result in serious environmental degradation or damage. The molten lava flows from the belly of the earth to the surface to form extrusive igneous rock. During the eruption, many harmful gases may be emitted into the environment, thereby destroying or causing serious danger to life. A gain, man in the process of carrying out some of his activities such as mining for mineral ones and building of dams for irrigation, does induce the occurrence of these otherwise natural phenomenon.

1.2.2    The Artificial Sources

These are the major sources of environmental degradation. They comprises of all activities that are injurious to the environment which does not have an origin, that is, which in orchinary cases of event would not have occurred. There are many artificial sources of environmental degradation (damage), through they all have one common denominator “man”. This is because man is the single and most important actor in the environmental scene. It is various efforts of making life more comfortable for himself have a direct impact in the environment and all other factors of degradation. Some of the activities of man which does causes degradation to environment are:

1.2.2.1       House and Chores

In the causes of carrying out its domestic activities in the hjouse, daily, man creates a lot of waste product and garbage which he discharge in the environment. The amount of house hold waste produced by man is such that if not properly disposed off, its impact on the environment will be unwholesome. In Nigeria for instance, the volume of house hold waste which is indiscriminately disposed of has led to the blocking of drainage and river channels. The result has being the occurrence of flood disaster lives and property were lost as was the case in “Ogunpa” river flood disaster in Ibadan in 1980 where lives were lost and property destroyed. In addition, waste from house hold which includes human excrement when not taken care of could have a repulsive small because of the harmful gas as Amonia sulfur (v) oxide and hydrogen sulphide it emits especially during decomposition. House hold waste particularly human excrement when disposed in water having marine life does result in the contamination of such organisms which feeds on it, making it unsuitable for human consumption,. Also some diseased condition maybe caused to livestock for example cattle, when they infest food contaminated with human feaces containing the eggs of tapeworm.

1.2.2.2       Agricultural Operation

This entails the tilling of the soil for crop husbandry and keeping of animals use of men. With the increase of human population, there is intensification of agricultural activities to meet the increasing food demand of the teeming population. This intensified farming has meant a continuous cropping of the sea piece of land over time as a result of scarcity of virgin forest for cultivation. It has also meant the growing of one crop on a large expense of land on which the crop species do best. This has lead to the cineaste in the incidence of pests, animals, and diseases attack on such crops, coupled with the rapid depletion of the nutrients available to the crop on such soil. The responses of man was being engaged in the application of various chemicals such as pesticides, fumigates and inorganic fertilizers on such farms to address the problems. The pesticides apart from being harmful to man if directly inhaled or infested by him have some other harmful effects on the environment. Also, the fe4rtilizer when the requisite nutrients has been taken by the soil the remaining may make the soil become acidic, therefore becoming unsuitable for crop cultivation.

Agriculture also enhanced the occurrence of other environmental hazards such as erosion and desertification by causing the removal of the soil cover through tillage operation and over grazing of land. It also destroys the structure thereby making the land unsuitable for other purposes.

1.2.2.3       Deforestation

The natural forest is a source of many useful products. Its provides home for numerous wild life, which provides bush meat and other product for man. The woods from the trees are used as a source of fuel as well as timbers for furniture and other requirement. The forest also serves as a windbreaker and vegetation cover to protect the soil against the erosion. More importantly, the forest play a very prominent role in the precipitation process and in the important “carbon circle” a break in which the existence of man will be endangered. The rapid destruction of the forest, through farming and other activities of man is causing much damage to the environment by depriving it of the importance roles that the forest plays in the stabilization of the ecosystem.

1.2.2.4       Hunting for Game and Over Fishing

In the natural food cycle, a chain exist which ensures that an equilibrium is maintained in the ecosystem. This prevents the over population of some organisms and the extinction of some others. But with the continuous hunting of some animals for food and other uses by man, the population of some of them is nearly extinct thus denying the environment that benefit of their natural roles in the ecosystem. The threat to the African elephant has made the world wild life fund to launch a campaign to stop it being hunted so as to save it from extinction.

1.2.2.5       Commercial Activities

There are various commercial act carried out by men especially with the advancement in technology and the means of transportation, so many advertisement such as billboards, handbills, etc litter the environment which are an eye sore to other nations. In addition, a large amount of waste is produced from the various commercial transactions, thereby adversely causing serious effect to the environment. Particularly, in the indiscriminate use and disposal of cellophane bags.

1.2.2.6       Industrialization

The advancement of scientific knowledge has led to the industrialization of the society with the aim of making life more comfortable for man by producing most of those goods efficiently and in adequate quantity. This has resulted in the growth of many industries concerned, which produce wastes that are harmful to the environment. Toxic emission from industries which burn fuels and even motors have devastating effects on the life farm when inhaled. Acid rains are a nightmare to those who live in the vicinity of industries that fenerates some toxic emissions. The discharge of untreated industries wastes effluents into the streams have been known to kill marine life and damage crops irrigated with water from such streams. Wastes from substances, such as mercury and its compound effects human, plants and animals life. The extent of the dangers of mercury was realized by the Japanese in 1986, when one industry processing methyl mercury discharged its waste into a lake, and it resulted in the death of thousands of villagers who ate fish from the lake.

Their women gave birth to deformed children poisonous gas leakages have there deadly effects mark the 20th anniversary of the poisonous gas leakage from, the union carbide cooperation.

1.2.2.7        Urbanization

With industrialization and urbanization, many people/flock to urban centres for greener pastures. These results in the population explosion in those centres which means an increase in the amount of waste product and in the other activities that bores on the environment. The result is the emission of carbon-dioxide and other dangerous gases into the urban atmosphere. The dense population makes the land to be sufficiently for all. The result is that all sorts of shanks are built on the open spaces to serve as accommodation. These not only deface the environment, but also could lead to soil erosion where channels are blocked.

1.2.2.8       Power Station

These include hydroelectric power station, thermal station, and nuclear sites. The vibration produced at these stations is enormous, such that it disturbs the environment and inconveniences lies around such sites. In nuclear sites, there are lots of ruche-active materials which takes many years to become harmless. Accidents can occur at the nuclear station which will normally cause considerable destruction to life and property. The Second World War is gruesome reminder of the devastation caused by atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. The more recent chemical disaster in Russia in 1986 has left 16 kilometer arching of the environment with in the nuclear reactor site desolate.

However, no life forms, flora or fowna is in the area any more and a lot of persons and livestock even in the neighboring country were exposed to an unprecedented level of reaction and either died or had to be destroyed.

1.2.2.9       Petroleum Pollution

The industrialization of the world has petroleum, a priced commodity. However, the exploitation of the commodity has made many harmful effect on the environment. The incident of petroleum pollution is common especially in area here its found. Cases of oil spillage are formed, which often pollutes rivers, streams and farm land, making them unsuitable for biotic life. During transportation process oil pollution has occurred in the high sea area where either there is an accident or the vessel carrying the oil had some problem. It has been estimated that over 3.5 million tons of oil is released into the oceans annually in the world.

There have been many reported cases of oil pollution in Nigeria. On the 17th of jolly 1980, there was a Texaco funiwa, fire oil blow out in Nigeria in Niger-Delta, and it was curtailed after 30 days at which it has conflict fire, for some hours, about 200, 00 barrels of oil were lost far villages including fishes in the town of funiwa and segama river were polluted and 350 hectares of land destroyed. Again, on the 2nd of November 1982, the Abudo oil pipeline spillage occurred when a pale loader belonging to bronelli Construction Company accidentally ripped a hole in the Nigeria national petroleum cooperation (NNPC) under ground corche oil pipe line. The oil flowed from it to nearly villages and polluted their land and water leading to crop with erring and drying up, death of marine life and soils. Yet another oil spillage occurred at Upheli in July 1984 from a field which took six days to curtail when it had polluted neighboring rivers and villages. Another is the koko incident, in delta State June 1988 where 3,888 tons of assorted toxic waste from Italy where found to have been illegally dumped at the fishing ports of koko lea cheats which oozed from the topic substances caused extensive ecological damage.

Further long-term degradation to the health of the village is still being feared. There was also the Jesse fire disaster on October 17th 1998, where over 100 lives and property were destroyed. Also on the 12th of January 1999, the idotio spillage in Akwa-Ibom State occurred, which affected twenty communities cutting across states, and there had been reported cases scattered around the country of oil pipe leakage causing massive destruction to the environment and lives. The flaring of natural gas has led to an increase in the temperature of gas producing communities and destruction of the biotic life as in the case of Niger Delta in Nigeria. Other artificial sources of environmental degradation are war, irrigation and drainage.

CONCLUSION

However, the fundamental causes of environmental degradation discussed above are not exhaustive, though it shows that the onus lies on the individuals to protect their environment. Therefore an environmentally aware populace is an essential per-requisite for attaching environmental protection.

ABSTRACT

This work and research carried out by the researcher has brought new awareness to the issue of Christians and polygamy. In this work the researcher directed his attention towards the dweller and indigenes of Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. According to the information conveyed from the research carried out, it was observed that the consequence of polygamy on Christian is pertinent. The researcher made use of questionnaire to sample the opinions of the people concerned the following result were obtained from nine localities or clans that made up the enclave, where the research was conducted many of the respondents speak on the need for Christians to desist from polygamy.  The data collected were analyzed using percentage storing of each response to an alternative answer. The researcher shows that the defect can be tacked by the man himself if he fair and firm in all his actions in the homes.

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Family according to encyclopedia America is a core group of persons related by birth, marriage or other names (such as adoption) who commonly reside in the same household.  The family is both subset of an individual’s total kinship network and a key unity of the household or domestic economy.

Although family composition and structure vary greatly from culture to culture in general. Furthermore, families have existed in all societies and in all periods of human history family is equally a powerful symbol of social cohesion and morally a kind of micro of community and society. When anthropologist and sociologist speaks of the family they may be referring to married parents and children or to a broader kinship units social scientists have postulated that in all societies the family is to perform a set of basic functions. a basic function may be considered any activity imperative for the continuing existence of the society. The organization of an individual is defined as a role and Is conceptualized around a specific function such as raising of children.

Moreover, each role implies a reciprocal role for example the sexual functions of marriage reside both in the husband’s role. According to J.B Chitamber (1972) family is the basic social institution of an organized relationship involving workable and dependable person by ties of marriage by blood, adoption, common consent and characterized by common residence and economic co-operation. Dr Martin Herbert (1975) on his own part states that all known societies the family is the most recognized unit which resumes the function of child bearing perpetuation of the family and human rules, socialization provision of economic man tenancy and live hood, love, affection and security. According to Bas Dean (1977) there are many types of family units of which monogamous and polygamous family units are inclusive.

The monogamous family unit is common in advance countries and hence it is commonly referred to us the Western type of family. It is mostly praised by some educated people, those who are religious ethnic’s permits only monogamous marriage and those legally married in the law court.

Polygamy therefore is a kind of marriage that permits a person to have more than one husband or wife. There is different type of polygamy, but the researcher is narrowing his finding to two striking, Examples polygamy and polyandry. Polygamy is a process whereby or which permits a man marry more than one woman or wife, while polyandry has to do with a woman, who married to more than one man or husband. This is practiced mostly in Tibet. The effect of this marriage on the girl child is what the researcher is basing his research. This type of marriage is prevalent in Nigeria particularly, Oredo local government area of Edo state. Dr Martin Herbert and Ushio Biolonwu daintily agreed on the following reasons:Traditionally: it is practiced because of the prestige it accord a man, in the society in which he lives Religiously; most religion encouraged the practice of marrying more than one wife for example in Islam you are expected to marry as many wife as you wish, depending on your purchasing power.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

In every societies of the world there are some specific structure designated to meet the immediate need of the society consequent upon this is Oredo settlement she has a robust nature of socialization which clearly defines the role of both sexes (male and female). Over the years position of women in Nigeria societies, especially in Oredo, has not be given a serious concern.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to identify the consequences of polygamous family unit on the Christian in Oredo local government area. To highlight the factors which gave rise to polygamous family unit, to offer suggestion that will bring about lasting solution to this menace.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The knowledge of the study will be of immense benefit to the following: the married women because they are majority involved in this type of marriage the opinion of the Christian about the issue of polygamous family unit in Oredo local government area of Edo state the findings of the research will be carefully analyzed and interpreted through the data collected and solution will be provided to a given problems.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

In order to achieve the objective of the study of the following questions were raised to know whether or not they affect the attitude of polygamous parents on the education of girls.

1.      Why do men involve in polygamous marriage?

2.      What are the effects of this type of marriage on the Christian?

3.      How will people avoid the negative effect posed by such marriage?

4.      What happens to such family when the man dies?

5.      Do you think educated parent will indulge themselves in polygamous marriage?

DEFINITION OF TERMS

EDUCATION: Is the totality of processes through which an individual acquires knowledge, skills, attitude and abilities which enable him or her to positively contribute towards the meaningful development of the society. Encyclopedia American a defined Education as a design to affirmatively assist individual to develop their skills or potentials and to lead a productive and satisfying lives culturally, education is the process whereby society preserves and perpetuates its social valves and institutions. It is the means by which the collective wisdom of the past is transmitted to each new generation.

POLYGAMOUS: This is the institution that permits the marrying of more than one wife or husband. It can either be polygamous, systematic polygamy is a situation in which a man marries a woman divorce her marries another, divorce her adifinitum. While polyandry is a process whereby a woman get married to more than one husband.

FAMILY: Family is seen as a subset of an individual total Kinsley network and a key unit of the household or domestic economy, a symbol of social cohesion and moral philosophy.
