ABSTRACT

IMPACT OF COLOUR REPRESENTATION IN NEWSPAPER ADVERTISING

Colour is the visual impression registered by the rating of the eye when struck by light. There are seven colours in the band, these are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Light is therefore the source of all colours. “when we see a red rose, we see it only because light reflects from it into our eyes, making the rose and its colour discernible colour then, is a property of the light waves reaching our eyes not of the object seen.

There are principally six colours made up of three primary colours blues, red, and yellow and three secondary colours orange, green and violet. This not withstanding, physics however, classify all colours of the light band which includes indigo as primary colours of light.

The secondary colours are so called because they are hybrid of the primary colours for instance orange is obtained by mixing yellow and red, green by mixing yellow and blue and violet (purple by mixing red and blue.

According to McCann Erickson, Inc, the advertising agency that develops coca-cola nationals campaigns said that advertising is “truth well told”. This philosophy is echoed by coke’s management . Today, we all have strong concepts of what adverting is and we also tend to have very strong opinions and prejudices about it. Definitions of advertising are many and varied. It may be defined as “communication process, a marketing process, an economic and social process, a public relations process, or an information and persuasion process” depending on the point of view. Advertising is also the non-personal communication of information, usually paid for and usually persuasive in nature, about products, services or ideas by identified sponsors through various media.

There is a trend in advertising these days in which various colours are in now being used in newspaper, magazine and television advertisements. Research has shown that advertisements presenting in colours are attractive and infact whips appatice. To be specific, the vanguard newspaper has been the major promoter of this trend and it is now generally believed by marketers that the impact of colour in advertising has positive effect on the quantum of products presented to the public of colours.

This study is however aimed at establishing if there is such correlation.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

In this scientific era of mass production, mass communication and mass consumption, advertising serve as an important factor between someone who has something to sell and someone who needs something. It is therefore been defined as “the means by which we make known what we have to sell or what we want to buy”.

It has also been defined as any paid form of non-personal presentation of ideas goods or services by an identifiable sponsor with predominant use, made of mass communication.

Furthermore, the association of advertising as “any paid form of non-personal communication intended to promote or create awareness for individual products or service by an identifiable sponsor”.

Advertising is often characterized as a means of selling to the masses, this is because “advertisement can change buying habits and it’s entertaining features are always interesting to match.”

But as Daniel S. Warner professor Emeritus, school of communication, university of Washington puts it in his book (1980, 41) “Adverts cannot change buying habit in deplorable situation”. He says that the greatest advert in the whole world cannot soil a product nor convince consumers to buy products which they feel costs too much, poorly package or in some other ways, do not live up to the expectation.

This leads to the popular misconception that advertising is directed at everyone. But obviously, people do not have the same scale of values and are not interested in the same things. Therefore, no product is consumed by any one at the same rate and no advertisement is equally appealing to anyone.

Some products universal appeal more than others and some advertisers have made markets than others, but each advertisement succeeds who can be reached on a common meeting ground. Also, to effectively convey advert sales message to this group, advertisers are free to choose from any of the advertising media-electronic or point to intensifying advert reach.

Traditionally, Nigerian display their goods such as yam tubers in excellent rows allowing sufficient quantity of the soil or mud to beautify that tuber. The mud is excellent potential sales point as it serves to address the tubers source areas in important way of portraying the tests. Adding to that in our local retail outlets, sellers consciously engage in attractive display of products or goods arrangements to serve as attention gather and help establish identity.

Colour has therefore been playing a unique role in advertising. Colour is not only a thing of beauty to individuals, it is naturally striking and compelling to uses generally or individually.

In as much as this topic deals with the impact of colour representation in Newspaper advertising on consumers as it concern the Daily sun newspaper, it cannot be a misnormal to state that advertising is focused in the face of conflicting completion of text. Photograph and interplay reader. There is there no need for colour reprsentation to aid quick recognition and readership which consciously design advert in colour to influence people’s buying behaviour change and that there would be greater impact on the readers.

The purpose of the study is to find out how colour of a product advertised in newspaper can affect our buying decision and habit, quite several studies have tried finding out the influence advertisement have on consumers but not specifically that by newspaper colour.

Why is it that people buy one good and ignore others? Has this any relevance to colour representation? These undoubtedly are going to form the basis for this study.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1            BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

It is necessary to glorify the minds that made ventures to the establishment of media. Media as a watch dog and the mirror of the nation perform crucial roles in the society media educate entertain analyses interpret ,motivate, create avenue, to failure and to success. Media as well monitor evaluate and correct al wrong activities concerning human existence. It executive and recommends, encodes and decodes and ensure feedback etc.

Media is metaphoric when we termed it to be a watchdog of eh nation and as well the mirror through which the  nation see and recognize itself. it is the importance of the media that place it to that position in that somebody cannot just get up and started printing or criticizing a nation  or society without having in mind any channel of dissemination of his information whether good or bad informational concern sense to the  target audience . It is therefore at this junction that journalist uses media aid to bring the nation what their society is like and how their government is  like and how good or bad the  personalities involved are like, then it is through this means that they will know what the are and how their activities moves whether it encourages the audience or discourage them.

It was through this mirror media the news that exposed the forgery certificate of Alhaja Salisis Buhari which he did at the University of Toronto Canada . the made president Obasanjo after taken over the government to launch crusade that will redress what he saw in the mirror . this made Alhaja Salisu Buhari to be brought down from his position of speaker of house representative

The media educate the ignorant it teaches them from known to unknown without it was when media publishes or air what people know that they will analyze was through media that people get to know what brought about the removal of Evans Ewerem from the position of senate president because of his falsification of age. The Nigerian media therefore exposes them, he evil operator of  their evil deed and drag them down from the success to failure through mentoring of their movement and activities and  evaluating and correcting their wrongs by disseminating it on air and preparing the audience to feedback recommending to the government the punishment that the deserve for the issue of awareness to be accomplished. Furthermore, in Nigeria society, the role of broadcasters and the broadcast media, as agents of rural and motional development,, especially at the information dissemination, watchdog level, is now generally recognized and accepted by experts and policy maker alike. Also, a critical appraisal of the socio-economic development of he people of he world indicates that the sits a spectrum of levels of development of he people of the among he nation stake and that within a given country there also  exist a spectrum of levels affluence poverty Importantly he development spectrum of the nations is demonstrably corrected with the amount of natural resources, indigenous technology and political stability whereas the affluence or poverty of  individual within a nation, may be  corrected with family background, ethnic origin, educational statement etc. depending on the character of the nation in question. Nigeria as a typical developing country to day has a citizenry with a multiplicity of ethnic groups, language, dialects, rural patterns, religious beliefs, and traditional institutes that lend to defy the best of intonations internal integration and development. usually only a small percentage of the people are literate in nay language, indigenous or foreign.

Meanwhile, the national government the enlightened segments of the society are aware of the need for wide spread education for both children and adults in order to achieve prescribed goals in economic growth, health care, political and special awareness, political stability, self reliance and nation identify, among other things for national development. From the above points, broadcaster media is a powerful and effective instrument for achieving these national goals, it has been recognized all over the world and in Nigeria in particular as the role of  broadcast media. In national development according to ADSDI, Uyo in the book the mass media and social change, he identified the functions performed by the  media of mass communication especially broadcast media as , information, education, entertainment, persuasion which he referred to fondly as the media pile- an acronym derived from the four basic function,

Therefore this study is an attempt to discover how media as an instrument for eradicating corruption of Obasanjo’s anti—corruption crusade. A  case study of NTA.

Since assuming office in May, 1999 president Olusegun Obasanjo has never hidden his intention to fight corruption which has permitted the social fabric of Nigeria from the top to bottom.

In order to raise that goal, he set up the independent corrupt practices and other related offences commission, otherwise known as the  ICPC, handed by justice Mustapha Akanbi, a retired judge of the court of appeal. But since then, the commission has remained a came dulk and toothless building until recently. In what observes sees a departure from the past and  a renew vigor in the anti-graft campaign the ICPC in early December imitated the arrest of prominent politicians and former government officials. In one fell SWOAP a serving of corrupt was fired over allegations of corrupt practices. not only was former minister of labour and productively, Alhaji Hassani Akwanga sacked he was  later arrested by security agencies for involvement in a $214m scan in the Jinx national identity card schema being handled by the minister of internal affairs. He was permanent secretary of that ministry before retiring and being appointed a minister.

The ICPC is currently prosecuting about sixty-two persons for various offense, these include politicians, judges, academic and members of the commission is said to have received over 942 petitions since inception out of which about 400 are still being investigated,. Firstly ,in view of this study.

1.2            STATEMENT OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM

The problem of study is the effect of the media and instrument for eradicating corruption. A case  study of Nigeria television authority inform of Obasanjo anti-corruption crusade. Opinion of the researcher to see if there is any significant effect on media being a powerful instrument to Obsanjo’s  crusade against  corruption. Truly, the has been series of struggle to attain this objective’s

Similarly, the legal philosophers and various notions of the nature, meaning and scope of corruption. Today the struggle to bring to the public the notification of their freedom from corruption by the media had been  respected attempt done by the media for its is the obligation of he media to carry out government opinions, translate it and analyze it to layman’s understanding.

Today, it is a mater of a national and internal affairs or concern in that that the rule of law has no meaning as some government as some government in African countries are dictatorial in nature and operate above the law, thereby something or action that above he law of its laud is a problem and that is the statement of problem of corruption and Obsanjo crusade against instrument to enforce awareness and motivates actions which was achieve a last.

For instance late Abacha chose Bariabas Jabilla (Nick names Roger) as his killer squad leader who carryout a lot of assassination for him therefore instead of investing money on development be rather used the money to send segment Rogers to North Kores to learn self defense and assassination and as well was given asset to presidential jet and many carts of which was announced that Tell magazine describe his appearance as lefty bearded Rogers who always poses a deceptive look with his athletic physique and cherubic face who usually decked in a special black Arab captain when on a mission to kill, al enemy of evil like assassination of Kurdurat Abiloa late and other simply because of the interview grange to her by the British broadcasting separation where she exposed late Abacha she was killed because she vowed to fight Abachs’s corruption to the last. She was killed  her husband Abiloa late won a free and fair election which was announced on June 12.

Problem are imminent in very aspect of human edeavour. As scholars researcher student are know that the Nigeria nation as Bedeviled with so much corruption which has hitherto been a constraint to national development. A category of corruption in synomious with Militaries, politicians, some are caused by employer government agencies, the common men, leader of thought the youths, the aged ad these are the component that make up the federation. A sample of corruption which this work tends to address is crime, drug abuse, juvenile delinquency, cultism, bribery and disobediences.

Therefore, in a situation like this, as the powerful instrument for reradicating corruption is at work but suffers in that there is no freedom of media activates yet that does not stop the media from motivation and action, through some personnel lost their lives in the process a good example is late Giwa founder of Newswatch, who was assassinated.

1.3            OBJECTIVES FO THE STUDY

The researcher intends at the end of this work to provide a lading solution of the problem of corruption in Nigeria. It also intends to asses the Obasanjo anti-corruption crusade to tell the public how far it has gone in trying to eradicating corruption in the society it also tends to form a frame work or basis for further research as far as corruption in concerned in Nigeria.

Chapter five summarises the entire work with some recommendations to it..

CHAPTER ONE

  • INTRODUCTION

The disagreement between the Ijaw and Itsekiri of Warri metropolis started as far back as July 1997, and lasted through May 29, 1999, and since then has brought about an intercommunal and political tussles. The Ijaws complained that the oil companies operating in the area could not embark on any development programme in that area. Instead the oil companies decided to help the then Oku of Warri, thereby leaving the community in a devastating and helpless state.

These atrocious acts, which began in 1997 and lasted through May 1999 have recently been resumed. To date, over 3,000 people including women and children, have been killed, their bodies desecrated. Additionally, 30 villages and towns have been destroyed and burnt with tens of thousands of Itsekiri rendered homeless. As the case between 1997 and 1999, both the federal government of Nigeria and then Government of Delta State have not acted to restore law and order, allowing the massacre and slaughter to continue unabated.

We have to take a look at some issues that brought about this community feud.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This study is typically on audience research and I am studying the influence of Age, sex and economic status on media preference among the Enugu Audience”.

The mass media are powerful instruments for opinion formation and change on contemporary issues in the society.

Therefore, the transmission of signals from the various media of mass communication at the same time presents the audience with the problem of choice, that is choosing the media that would best satisfy their needs in their order of preference.

Wilbur schramm (1949) supports the view that choice of media is influenced by needs satisfaction when the he wrote about the concept of reward as a factor that accounts for attendance to mass communication messages. According to him, the mass media are expected to take care of audience needs and satisfaction and to help them solve problems whether the communication is purposive or non-purpossive.

Readers or listeners select news in anticipation of a reward which may be either the immediate reward of drive reductions or vicarious experience or the delayed, reward of threat value; and general preparedness for reality, that for any individual the boundaries of these two are not fixed and immutable but that news of public affairs,

Economic matters, social problems,

Science education, health is usually read for delayed reward and News of crime and corruption, accidents, disasters, sports and recreation, social events and human interests, for immediate rewards”.

Furthermore, the democratic participant theory of the mass media suggests, among other things, that individuals citizens and minority groups have rights of access t media according to their one served by media according to their own determination of need. Thus the mass media should exist primarily for their audiences and not for the media organization, professionals or the clients of media.

The central point of this theory lies with the needs, interests and aspirations of the receiver of mass media messages. The media practitioners should, therefore, avail him self of information regarding such needs, interests and aspirations so as to be able to communicate more effectively.

He should have information regarding such profits as the age, sex, income, education, attitude, values, life-styles and location of his audience members and how these effect media preference.

The traditional approach to audience research is to find out which aspect of a particular communication medium listeners most often emphasize. Research ridges the gap between the mass media and their audience. It represents a perfect example of the two-way concept of mass communication and acts like a mirror to show the media institutions who receivers their messages; how, where and when.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

The impact of home video on the life of students in tertiary institution in Nigeria. The work of the twenty first centuries because of the advent of technology. Today it now dominates the life of man kinds. It has been upgrade to a level where all things happen without using energy as it was in the case of post centuries. This century had brought along changes and unstoppable materialization one of which is the adoption of style of living by the Africa continent and Nigeria most especially. Even as we have some ‘’ sit tight’’ cultural believe it is obvious that the advent of technology has really affected societal norms and values.

However the gospel truth remains that the society is misplacing its values cultural heritage and at the center of all our students in tertiary institution who are undoubtedly leaders of tomorrow whether they are possessions of quality personality or on the contrary. The Nigeria home videos are been celebrated by these students. Most of them had formed the undeniable habits of watching every

Home video released into the market hence there have been a mountain of criticisms being leveled on these home videos for their failure to promote morality in our higher institution of learning.

What is being showcased and obtain in home videos in nutshell are cases of violence prostitution, money laundering armed robbery and photography as could be extracted from this film ‘’THE SENATOR’’ the film propagate double standard, lack of honesty cultism, wrong societal value blackmail success through dubious means lack of respect for parents. As a mirror to the society, the film has been label to send a wrong message to the minds of students of higher institution. It misplaced the universal standard of how an average student ought to go about in   his/ her sojourn in tertiary institution, making thieves armed robbers, cultists from our generation of students. Home video in Nigeria instead of bringing messages story lines that could promote our cultural heritage and good values have deviated in adding more problem instead of trying to solve them. Some films introduces prostitution as the only way out for a female students whose infirmity could not pay her school fees; as if prostitution is the answer to poverty. Thy failed to show some students that are in such situation that the normal thing to do may be through menial jobs and other sources.

The video ‘’The senator’’ brings out social vices and deviant behaviour in the truth of matter remains that the impacts such films is having on students of tertiary institution is of negative. Now some believe that getting to the top is by joining secret cults or becomes black mailers. Such videos create conflict of reasoning and most time changes ideas and orientation thereby causing violence in our higher institution.

Today, our institutions are dumping ground of mediocre. There you will find prostitutes armed robbers homosexuals, lesbians, cultists. Worse still is that home video promote the ills, finding its way into our campus and after scrutinizing every home videos one can hardly find one that promote hard work intelligence respect peace meekness development events, education or promote moral education that is to say the home videos producers/ makers gives our student foreign disguise through our local actors and actresses. our nervousness now is that the continual extent had adverse social and moral decadence in our campuses which we cannot risk and afford if our future should be guaranteed.
