 ABSTRACT

The objective of the study is to ascertain the role the radio place in the political mobilization of Nigerian women.

Factors like radio, interpersonal communication, exposure, objectively and sycophancy were examined to impact on the effectiveness of radio political news in mobilizing Nigerian women.

Relevant theories and the literature that constitutions the basic frame work of the study were examined.

Data collected were analyzed in order to determine the effects of these factors on the effectiveness of the radio political news in mobilizing these women.

From the finds, it is observed that radio political news has influence in mobilizing women, it motivated their political opinion and attitude, leads them to political formation and although they tend not to see the news being non objective, they indicated that the government and its agencies distort the news.

Also importantly, interpersonal communication was observed as a motivator too.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The background of this study looks into the role played by the radio as a medium in the political mobilization of women in Nigeria.

There are other communication communication channels like television, interpersonal (rituals and festivals, gongs, drums), newspapers and magazines; these are channels of information dissemination. But in view of how effective these channels could be used in performing the role of mobilizing women through out the nation into participating in politics, its credibility is given to radio in getting political message to its target audience (women) informed.

Even though the newspaper and magazines for their non- transient features would have helped, it is found difficult these days to be affordable by average Nigerians and women in their own situation finds it more difficult to spend their income in buying newspapers or magazines in order to get information in this economic crunch situation in the country today.

Hence, radio is used as their resort for information acquisition. Also, the television due to its high cost is not easily affordable by every family, and for the traditional communication, since these targeted audience (women generally) some of which are from urban areas, it is found difficult or ineffective to disseminate information to them. This is because they have socially developed too. Hence they can tune to their various transistor radio sets for information.

Obiakalusi Lynda et al (1991) in their research work stated that Nigerians political independence in 1960 had raised hopes of many that the nation was being set towards achieving a free and democratic society. In such a democratic society, it is expected that the press such as radio in particular should be the market place of political thought. The radio therefore, should exist mainly to serve the information need of the citizenry in politics.

Akpan (1985) mass communication in Nigeria: book of reading (Nwuneli) say that the public is entitled to all facts in a political situation and that on the basis of these facts, it can make its decisions. However, these woman being to revert to political interest.

Again warren, Kendall (1985: 1990) position that radio for its social role as a mobilization channel made American listens to feel the brutal impact of Hitler’s demands against the background of hysterical orator and frenzied nazi crowd reaction. They (American) were graved when they heard morrow described war preparation in London, relieved when kilter born predicted that chamberlain and Hitler found a peace solution at Munich. However, it was radio that brought to them this scene of personal participation in what they realized was the world’s crisis not merely Europe’s.

The mass media generally performed broad social functions to the audience and these functions are entertainment, information and education. Therefore, the radio playing the same function, in terms of providing messages to its listeners while it is entertaining them thereby reminding its targeted audience (women).

THE-INFLUENCE OF AGE, SEX AND ECONOMIC STATUS ON MEDIA PREFERENCE AMONG THE ENUGU AUDIENCE.

THE-INFLUENCE OF AGE, SEX AND ECONOMIC STATUS ON MEDIA PREFERENCE AMONG THE ENUGU AUDIENCE.

ABSTRACT

The media is the channels of disseminating information such as radio, television Newspaper etc.

Each of these channels is preferred by a particular audience the preference is greatly influenced by such factors as age, sex and economic status of the media audience.

There is the general belief that the television is the most efficient medium of disseminating information across the status of the society hence it has both audio and visual appeal to the audience and having Enugu metropolis in focus.

The objective of the work is to ascertain the level of age, sex and economic status influence on media preference. This will help the programme planners for radio, television and Newspaper editors in Enugu to know how best to handle programme schedule, approach and time presentation of programmes.

The method used in carrying out the study is survey method of research. The survey method was used to analyse the influence of Age, sex and economic status on media preference, among the Enugu audience with the administration of 22- point questionnaire.

Finally, the respondents responded to the question administration to them and the findings was in accordance with the research topic.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This study is typically on audience research and I am studying the influence of Age, sex and economic status on media preference among the Enugu Audience”.

The mass media are powerful instruments for opinion formation and change on contemporary issues in the society.

Therefore, the transmission of signals from the various media of mass communication at the same time presents the audience with the problem of choice, that is choosing the media that would best satisfy their needs in their order of preference.

Wilbur schramm (1949) supports the view that choice of media is influenced by needs satisfaction when the he wrote about the concept of reward as a factor that accounts for attendance to mass communication messages. According to him, the mass media are expected to take care of audience needs and satisfaction and to help them solve problems whether the communication is purposive or non-purpossive.

Readers or listeners select news in anticipation of a reward which may be either the immediate reward of drive reductions or vicarious experience or the delayed, reward of threat value; and general preparedness for reality, that for any individual the boundaries of these two are not fixed and immutable but that news of public affairs,

Economic matters, social problems,

Science education, health is usually read for delayed reward and News of crime and corruption, accidents, disasters, sports and recreation, social events and human interests, for immediate rewards”.

Furthermore, the democratic participant theory of the mass media suggests, among other things, that individuals citizens and minority groups have rights of access t media according to their one served by media according to their own determination of need. Thus the mass media should exist primarily for their audiences and not for the media organization, professionals or the clients of media.

The central point of this theory lies with the needs, interests and aspirations of the receiver of mass media messages. The media practitioners should, therefore, avail him self of information regarding such needs, interests and aspirations so as to be able to communicate more effectively.

He should have information regarding such profits as the age, sex, income, education, attitude, values, life-styles and location of his audience members and how these effect media preference.

The traditional approach to audience research is to find out which aspect of a particular communication medium listeners most often emphasize. Research ridges the gap between the mass media and their audience. It represents a perfect example of the two-way concept of mass communication and acts like a mirror to show the media institutions who receivers their messages; how, where and when.

INTRODUCTION

The impact of home video on the life of students in tertiary institution in Nigeria. The work of the twenty first centuries because of the advent of technology. Today it now dominates the life of man kinds. It has been upgrade to a level where all things happen without using energy as it was in the case of post centuries. This century had brought along changes and unstoppable materialization one of which is the adoption of style of living by the Africa continent and Nigeria most especially. Even as we have some ‘’ sit tight’’ cultural believe it is obvious that the advent of technology has really affected societal norms and values.

However the gospel truth remains that the society is misplacing its values cultural heritage and at the center of all our students in tertiary institution who are undoubtedly leaders of tomorrow whether they are possessions of quality personality or on the contrary. The Nigeria home videos are been celebrated by these students. Most of them had formed the undeniable habits of watching every

Home video released into the market hence there have been a mountain of criticisms being leveled on these home videos for their failure to promote morality in our higher institution of learning.

What is being showcased and obtain in home videos in nutshell are cases of violence prostitution, money laundering armed robbery and photography as could be extracted from this film ‘’THE SENATOR’’ the film propagate double standard, lack of honesty cultism, wrong societal value blackmail success through dubious means lack of respect for parents. As a mirror to the society, the film has been label to send a wrong message to the minds of students of higher institution. It misplaced the universal standard of how an average student ought to go about in   his/ her sojourn in tertiary institution, making thieves armed robbers, cultists from our generation of students. Home video in Nigeria instead of bringing messages story lines that could promote our cultural heritage and good values have deviated in adding more problem instead of trying to solve them. Some films introduces prostitution as the only way out for a female students whose infirmity could not pay her school fees; as if prostitution is the answer to poverty. Thy failed to show some students that are in such situation that the normal thing to do may be through menial jobs and other sources.

The video ‘’The senator’’ brings out social vices and deviant behaviour in the truth of matter remains that the impacts such films is having on students of tertiary institution is of negative. Now some believe that getting to the top is by joining secret cults or becomes black mailers. Such videos create conflict of reasoning and most time changes ideas and orientation thereby causing violence in our higher institution.

Today, our institutions are dumping ground of mediocre. There you will find prostitutes armed robbers homosexuals, lesbians, cultists. Worse still is that home video promote the ills, finding its way into our campus and after scrutinizing every home videos one can hardly find one that promote hard work intelligence respect peace meekness development events, education or promote moral education that is to say the home videos producers/ makers gives our student foreign disguise through our local actors and actresses. our nervousness now is that the continual extent had adverse social and moral decadence in our campuses which we cannot risk and afford if our future should be guaranteed.

ABSTRACT

The interim national government headed by chief Earnest Shonekan popularly known as “ING” was a child of circumstances the regime under general Sani Abacha murdered the child of circumstance. And the regime was regard as a child of necessity. But the antecedent that led to the birth of both children was the announcement of the June 12 Mandate of 1993.

The announcement of the June 12, Presidential general election of 1993 can never be wiped away from the book of word history neither can it easily be erased from the mind of the Nigerians who gave the mandate.

And the June 12 of 1993 controversial issue which attracted many of criticism from all over the world and led to whatsoever sanction that was placed on Nigerian during Abacaha regime. Abacha in his public broadcast to Nigerians, promised that his administration being a child of necessity was born with new packages that will necessitate a suitable democratically elected government, there would be the appointment of the constitutional review committee followed by the establishment of national constitutional body that would come out with a constitution that would reflect geographical heterogeneity of Nigeria.

But the question is, why was the relationship between the child of necessity and the media?

The advancement of any society whether political, economical, educational and soci-cultural development is dependent on the available of adequate information to the members of the public. And the chief custodian of the free market place of ideals is the media. But when the height of free market place of ideals is denied, the society cannot be carried along in the development governmental activities in the state.

IBB’s military regime fermented the media over eight years and even prevented the psyche of the media so much that the voice of he media was not different this is because military culture had common breast which they suck .. moreover, during Abacha’s first broadcast he used IBB’s phrases throughput..

However, this study will try as much as possible to highlight the various torment of the media under the administration of Abacha. The study is highly proposed towards excavating the or deals and predicaments of the Nigeria media, under Abacha military regime.

These predicaments are to be examined under the broad categories of extra- legal measures against the media.

Elicitation of obnoxious decrees against the media and finally proscription of media houses.

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

As one of the most important institutions in nay organized human society, the media is always objected to play vital roles in the society. The obligation is, in many ways self imposed and goes well with the freedom to report comment participate and publish which the media always fifth for, guards very jealousy and cherish enormously.

The child of circumstances came to be generally known an accepted as the Abacha regime. Before this military regime, Nigeria had undergone series of military government, each Junta era brought with itself several measures which acted as impediment on the Nigerian media. The dictatorship stand for eight long years, which the media under these years had a raw deal from it.

It is only in an environment of freedom within the law and with responsible judgment that the role which the media has fro the role can be vitally carried out.

Once this freedom is unjustly and intermittently interfered with by government, law courts or any others groups or individual, the media tend not to function very effectively and the most affected are the people because they are not well, informed .

There was a lot of dictatorship under the military because they had the ultimate power which is the power to Gun. They didn’t give the media room to play their roles as watchdog of the society rather they mate out extra- legal measures on the media more as punishment for reporting fats than as check as and balances.

The media can be regarded both as a compass and a morrow compass as used by the surveyor to map out the surrounding effectively and to set up the needed direction and on the other hand a mirror no only to see himself as he is, but also to see clearly how crooked or straight the path already mapped out is, without deviating from cutting out al the important direction. • INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Berlo (1960:10) defines communication as a process that involves all acts of transmitting messages to channels which link people to the languages and symbolic codes which are used to messages, the means by which   massages are received and stored, and the rules, customs and conventions which define and regulate human relationships and event.

Daramola (1997:50) gave many definitions of communication that illustrate the use of the terms in relation to two ways communication process. He said, that “communication is the broad field of human interaction which takes place through symbols. The symbols may be gestureral, pictorial, plastic, verbal or any other symbols which operate as stimuli to behaviour which would be evoked by the symbol itself in the absence of special conditions of the person who responds”

Communication is at the heart of all social intercourse. It maintains and animates life. It is the motor and civilization. It leads from instinct to inspiration through variegated processes and systems of enquiry, command and control. It creates a common pool of ideas strength thens the feeling of togetherness through exchange of massages and translation thought into action reflecting every emotion and need from the humblest test of human survival to supreme manifestation of creativity or destruction.
