CHAPTER ONE

1.1     INTRODUCTION

English language originated in England and is now widely spoken throughout the continents. It is the primary language of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Austrialia, Ireland, New Zealand, and various small Island nations in the Carribean Sea and Pacific Ocean. It is also an official language of India, the Philippines and many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa. In Nigeria, English Language is the lingual Franca. This makes the language an indispensable tool for students in the country to communicate and interact socially because of the numerous indigenous languages/dialects spoken by the different ethnic groups in different parts of the country. Some dialects are similar both in spoken and in written form, while others are radically different from one another. These Nigerian languages include Kwale, Owan, Urhobo, Edo, Ijaw and Yoruba. However, none of these dominant tribal languages has been generally accepted as a national language. English language is the official language in Nigeria and the means through which the colonial masters in their era used in uniting the various tribes for communication to take place.

English language is global the language of technology, science, aviation and computer, education and at that a world language of importance. Therefore efficient spoken/written knowledge of English Language is of basic importance to the study of every other subject of Standard English language command respect and prestige in the society. Inspite of the importance of correct use of English language, it is found that in particular students perform woefully in its usage both in examinations and daily life interactions. A number of factors contribute to the situation one of which is the constant used of pidgin English in the study and living situations including the primary and junior secondary schools. It becomes challenging as the role of teachers in teaching English language in the primary and junior secondary schools. To speak Standard English with the students especially those in junior secondary moreso the certificate classes level of JSS III, SS III level. This will be English teachers encouraging the pupils to speak it every time and anywhere with availability of adequate instructional materials to aid the teaching and learning of English language.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

Pidgin English is traceable to the Portuguese coming to Nigeria as traders and missionaries. Pidgin English is a hybrid language, contains elements of both immediate African language speaking environment and English. It is learned usually as L2 at times as L1. It is not what a learner learn by itself because it is no developmental. It is a fairly closed language sound system and serves restricted numerous functions an expanding to serve fresh function by wholesale borrowing of vocabulary from English. The missionaries from Portugal used pidgin English as a means of communication with the natives of the coastal lands. Today, Pidgin English is used to facilitate communication link among individual, serves as a language of the literate and the illiterate in the Nigerian society. However, this Pidgin English which is mostly used at homes market, primary and junior secondary schools among peer groups should be stepped aside in the school system gamut of the society by the teachers so that standard English acquisition and command comes to the way of learners. This will make students take the standard English learning and efficient daily use serious and afford them active a command of good English in terms of communication and enjoyable social interaction.

1.3     PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The study purpose among others investigate the reasons students use Pidgin English instead of a Standard English. Also to make them know it has effect on their use of English i.e. it hampers proficient use and retards progress in acquiring good English language. The study would also show the way out to students on how to minimize Pidgin English usage in their daily performance.

1.4     SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of this study is to be found among others in parents/students and teachers recognition that Pidgin English usage slows down the pace of efficient use of English. In various homes, native language is spoken most often, then the pidgin English and there English. It may be in form of our dialects, Pidgin English or Standard English. The background of our upbringing matters a lot, when we are taught in pidgin for instance, there is no way we can have a good command of Standard English anywhere we find ourselves. Rather the parents who had trained up their children with Standard English would be proud of their children, hearing them use Standard English to communicate, Standard English enhances the children’s educational standard because English is a means through which every other subject is taught.

In the same vein, a situation where a child is trained to use Pidgin in communication, the child finds it difficult to understand his teacher when the lesson is going on. Therefore, if a child is trained up with standard English at school, the child learns easily without any stress or strain to understanding the language used by the teacher (i.e. Standard English). Teachers does not find it difficult to disseminate any information to such Standard English background oriented student(s). the teacher would be happy seeing his students excel in the examinations and of course the students would command respect or prestige in the society using eloquently the Standard English.

1.5     RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. 1.  Are there available qualified teaches handling the teaching/learning of English language?
  2. 2.  Does Pidgin English have any influence on the teaching and learning of English Language?
  3. 3.  Is there any relationship between Pidgin English and English Language?

CHAPTER ONE

1.0    Background of the Study

1.1   Introduction

It is today universally accepted that Education is the fountain and foundation of all wisdom, therefore, the importance of education in any community cannot be overemphasized. Education is the major factor for sustainable development as well as a strong pillar around which every other action revolves. This is because education is the most necessary and effective weapon identified by the world over advancement of human progress and development. For rapid socio – economics and social political development of Nigeria, education or at least the basic one is indispensable (Wales,1996).

The biggest obstacle that needs immediate attention in Nigeria and other developing countries is how to reach the unreached. Education wise, how to take education to the door steps of the masses. A lot of researchers found that between 65% to 70% of children do not go to school. From analysis made by stakeholders, it was obvious that the explanations advanced that low enrollment among others was mostly financial. Many parents find it hard to enroll their children in the school and where they do, many of the children do not stay to complete their studies due to financial problem, poverty and low level of awareness on the needs to send children to school. The Universal Primary Education (UPE) Scheme was the first attempt at the national level by government to establish a universal education programme in Nigeria. It was launched in 1976 by President Obasanjo, the then Military Head of State, compared to the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme launched in 1999 (Isyaku, 2000).

The objectives of the UPE were more modest and directed by what was perceived to be the needs of the nation at the time it was; To ensure that every Nigerian child from age of six, attended primary school and remained therefore the next six years, under a free education scheme funded by the federal and state government (Obasanjo, 1999).

It is of interest to note that the UPE was not a total failure as general opinion tends to portray. This was so because the programme recorded and increased in the number of children in primary school from 6 million in 1977 when it started to `12 million in 1980 (Obasanjo, 1999).

The obstacle UPE faced, began from the middle of the 1980s were also acknowledged. The problems faced them were categorized in three broad groups. First, is the population explosion of the 1980s which led to sudden astronomical rise in the number of school age children who could not be accommodated within the existing school structure, this was in turn due to inadequate schools and acute shortage of trained and qualified teachers. Second was the decline in national revenue which militated against the allocation of sufficient funds for the expansion and quality improvement of the scheme. The third and final problem was political instability in the country which caused confusion in terms of what priority should be given to advance education at all levels for UPE to go beyond mere re-commitment and for it to represent the actualization of the “expand vision”, all hands must be on deck (of those who lead, the led and those who stand between the leaders and the led) must occupy sincerity, transparency and accountability to implement the UBE programmes. There was a world conference on education held in Jomtien, Thailand in 1991 which was popularly called Education for all (EFA). This conference was sponsored by the effort of some of the world organizations and attracted all the Ministers of Education from all the countries of the world. The outcome of the world conference on education was the recommendation of the concept of ‘Basic Education’ to be adopted by all countries in the bid to reduce dropout and illiteracy rates in every society. The report on the state level policy dialogue on UBE programme organized by Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Primary Education Board states that every citizen of the world enjoys fundamental human right to education. To determine its exact nature and content depends on the context – political, socio – economic, cultural, technological etc of each society. UBE therefore entails the following:

–               An enlarged view of education to integrate formal and informal possibilities for the development of human potentials.

–               An attainment that is not confined to orthodox education agencies but which requires the input of other socio – economic development sector.

–               An affair that is a lot more than the government organization and the entire civil societies.

–               A strong emphasis on learning, that is, success in acquiring basic skills of literacy numeracy to learn as the most valuable end result of education.

“Education for all is the business of all” is the slogan used to summarize what UBE is all about (UBE Digest 2002) to narrow down UBE to the Nigerian situation, one can say that basic education in Nigeria encompasses vertical and horizontal dimension. The vertical dimension is the broad spectrum of formal and informal approaches to education. The horizontal dimension covers the linear vision of education from early childhood care and education of junior secondary school with respect to the scope of programmes, it goes beyond junior secondary school, since the concept of UBE is a life long based venture, as skills acquired are used for further learning according to changes, in individual and national development. The basic aims and specific objective of the UBE as spelt out in the Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN) implementation guidelines for UBE programme (2000) are:

–               The provision of free, universal education for every Nigerian child of school age.

–               Reducing drastically the incidency of dropout from the formal school system through the relevant quality and efficiency.

–               Catering for young persons who for one reason or the other have had to interrupt their schooling as well as other out of school children/adolescent through appropriate forms of complementary approaches to provision and promotion of basic education ensuring the acquisition of the appropriate levels of literacy, numerically manipulative, communicative and life skill as well as ethical moral and civil values needed for laying a solid foundation for life long learning. There is need to identify the main areas of strategy, in implementing the UBE successfully. The key areas are: a teachers training programme for curriculum defines a building programme designed for the new curriculum. The infrastructure and facilities remain inadequate for coping with the system that is growing at a rapid pace. Lack of teaching and learning resources. The financial crisis left the existing facilities inadequately maintained and has retarded progress in building new facilities.

1.2    Statement of the Problem

One of the objectives of education in Nigeria, to which the nation’s philosophy is linked to, is the acquisition skill, abilities and competencies both physical and mental as an equipment for individual to line and contribute to the development of the society (UPE, 2004). Thus after completion of primary school, an individual can choose between continuing with his studies or opt for immediate employment because it is expected that he might have acquired some basic skills that equipped him or her for employment.Nevertheless, the implication of this is that adequate facilities, like, classrooms, libraries, instructional facilities and enough qualified teachers will be provided in all the primary schools. This smooth implementation of the UBE also requires that adequate fund is to be provided for the procurement of facilities and training of personnel. Educational system in Nigeria over the years has faced a lot of problems including lack of needed human and material resources. Inadequacy in this area has lowered educational standard in the country. For successful Implementation of the Universal Basic Education (UBE), the Education sector must make sure it manages its financial, physical and material resources properly. This study is designed to appraise the Universal Basic Education in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

1.3    Purpose of the Study

The general purpose of the study is to assess the implementation of UBE in Toto Local Government Area specifically, the study aims at.

  1. Determining the availability of instructional materials
  2. Determining the availability of Infrastructure
  3. Determining the number of trained teachers.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to determine the common health problems among primary school pupils in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State comprised of twenty two (22) primary schools; but during the study, fifteen (15) primary schools was selected for the study. The survey design was used to carryout the study. The population for the study was made up of 1,200 teachers from the fifteen (15) selected primary school. The sample population for the study comprised of 315 teachers from the fifteen selected primary schools and this served as respondents. It was discovered from the study that the common diseases among the pupils in the primary school were; cholera, typhoid fever, cardiovascular disease, malaria, dysentery and diarrhea. It was discovered during the study that the level of preventive measure of those diseases were inadequate. The level of ventilation in some classes was poor, and the pupils were overcrowded; that led to the emergency of diseases such as measles among the pupils in the primary schools in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State. It was recommended that the three (3) components of school Health program should be reinforced to enhance the well being of both the teachers and the pupils. And the school should be provided with health facilities and equipment, and there should be constant immunization of the pupils in the primary schools in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State to prevent the outbreak of some diseases among the pupils in the school.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Health as a concept attracts many definition, nevertheless, health is not the absence of disease. It is not synonymous with an individual’s ability to be productive. Health as an indispensable aspect of human being has a lot of roles play especially in the achievement of ones anticipated goals. Health contributes to the excellent academic performances of an individual. A healthful pupil stands a greater chance of positive academic performances than an ill-health pupil. There are several factors militating against the optimal health of an individual. These factors do only affect physical aspect of health alone, but also affect emotional, mental, social and even academic output of an individual. Ghaptanda (2008) stated that health of people is vital to a nation as water is to fish. He also observed that no individual family, community or even country can be happy and progressive in the absence of good health.

In any school, the school Health programme which has three (3) components working together for the achievement of all round healthful living has to be strengthened to enhance the effective and healthful living of both the teachers and the pupils. The three (3) components of school health programme are: school health instruction, school health service and healthful school living. But when these three (3) components of school health programme are not functional then there is a grate tendency for the outbreak of communicable and non-communicable diseases among the pupils and this will invariably affect their academic performances. Wason (2006) maintained that the outbreak of some communicable diseases among pupils could be attributed to the insanitary nature of the school environment.

Therefore to prevent and control the outbreak of diseases such as cardiovascular diseases bronchitis, cholera, diarrhea, dysentery, malaria, typhoid fever etc. among the pupils in the primary schools in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State; there should be adequate supply of portable water, the health facilities and equipment have to be adequately provided in the school, the health personnel in the school give appropriate medical treatment to the unhealthy pupils and lastly, the teacher should educate the pupils on the preventive and control measures of the diseases or infections.

Statement of the Problem

A school environment is supposed to be in atmosphere that supports life. But because of the insanitary nature of some school environment, some pupils have been infected with one illness or the other. These diseases have direct adverse effect in their academic performances. The outbreak of some these diseases have rendered some persons unfit to carry out their daily routine; and if proper attention is not given to the treatment to those diseases, it may lead to death.

Efobi (2001) stated that unhealthy condition affects their children physical, mental and intellectual development. The health problems affect their physical and muscular growth thereby leaving them stunted. Njoku (2006) maintained that some other child related diseases affect the children hearing, sight and speech. He also stated that the health problems affect the children both socially and psychologically. The parents are made to suffer adversely as they go from one hospital to the other seeking their children’s care.  When children are not healthy, teaching and learning may be badly affected which means children will not perform well in their external examinations. It is therefore pertinent to have a study of common health problems in primary schools in Ika North East Local Government Area of Delta State.

Purpose of the Study

THE INFLUENCE OF HOME BACKGROUND ON THE CAREER CHOICE

THE INFLUENCE OF HOME BACKGROUND ON THE CAREER CHOICE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Home is a place in which children learn to interpret realities (Wary and Passman, 1996) parents serve as significant interpreters to children for information about the world and children ability (Hall, Kelly, Hansen and Vulwein, 1996) home influence is an important force in preparing students for their role as workers. Young people form their attitude about work and career as a result of interaction with the home. Home background provides the basis on which a student’s career planning and decision making evolves. However, within each home, the level of involvement can very positively or negatively.

Home background factor found to be associated with career choice includes parents socio-economic status (SES), their level of education and bio-genetics factor such as physical size, gender, ability and temperament, Panic and Jepson (1992), in a study on adolescent vocational development reported that had the most effect on education plans and occupational aspiration was education. Mortime et al (1992) also reported that parents with post secondary education tend to pass along its importance in their children a finding reported by other studies. Montgomery (1992) votes that students talented in mathematics viewed their career choice as reflective on the interest that stem from early home influence and educational opportunities.

De Piddeo (1990) however, points out that the lower level of parents education can retard adolescents career choice. Being born to parents with limited education and income reduces the likelihood of going to college or achieving a professionally and occupational goals and essentially predetermined the child’s likely career choice. Home income is another aspect of home background that influences the career choice of a student. Mortimer et al (1992) one reason for this may be that home with limited economic resources may tend to direct children first the older children in the home giving less hope and encouragement to the younger children in the home. It is therefore understandable that the self efficacy of students with respect to career opportunities is linked to the economic support they can expect from their parents. Another home background factor found to be associated with career choice include the parents spiritual/health parents who love Jesus and want the best for their children will urge their children to pursue a career that will bring them joy in the future. Thus proverbs 22:6 admonished parents to pay attention to their children while the children in turn should prove themselves obedient (Ephesians 6:13).

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The standard of education in Nigeria today is gradually falling thus leading to lots of arrangements amongst scholars civil servants, educational planners etc as to what is the immediate and remote causes of the failure and the factors hindering high standard of education, while we may blame governments, teachers, and children, the home which students comes from leave much to be desired. It is important to note that we cannot exonerate the home that a child came from when talking about the students choice of career in secondary school. Home background factors found to have influence the students choice of career is based on parents socio-economic status, parents educational level, parents love for Jesus and family size and parents temperament.

RESEARCH QUESTION

In order to deal with the influence of home background on the career choice of secondary school students the following questions were asked:

1.          To what degree does the socio-economic status of parents influence the career choice of students in secondary school?

2.          Is there any relationship between the level of education of parents and the career choice of students in secondary schools?

3.          Does the size of a home have any influence on the choice of career of secondary school students?

4.          Is there any relationship between living condition at home and choice of career of students?

5.          To what extend does the ability and temperament of parents affect the choice of career of students?

Home is the bedrock of the child’s socialization processes. A child starts to learn even right from its mother womb and as such as it is born to this world (2 Timothy 2:15) as Gods creature, made in God’s image, the child does not learn in vacuum but rather is active by learning, in a society of humans who influence his guess such society embodies the home which the family belongs to and school source of western education. It is observed that the choice of career of students in secondary school can be denied by their parent’s socio-economic status, level of educational, family size of the parent ability.  It is therefore the purpose of this study to investigate the impact of home background on the choice of career of students in secondary schools.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Students succeed in school when certain factors are put in place or put under control, some of these includes ensuring that the child feeds well at home, get enough rest, does his home work has his work checked by both his teachers and parents, has his school materials, gets adequate encouragement from their parents, useful information should be given the child to guide futures generation of choice of career. In the light of the above, the students will assist parents to have insight into the behavior and needs of their children. The study intends to reveal the factors that impedes or enhance the choice of students in secondary schools.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study is restricted to secondary schools in Esan Central local government area of Edo State. In the realization of similar condition facing most students in other secondary schools in Edo State the survey shall focus on students in their first year and final year of studies.
