CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The western from of formal education started back in 1842 by the activities of the Christian missionaries while real secondary education in Nigeria started in 1926 with first education followed by Hussey’s educational proposal of 1930

Since then mission and other voluntary organizations had been in control of primary secondary and teachers education till 1970 when the  federal military government took over of school from voluntary organizations.

The aim and objective was to enable the government rededicate theracy   in the country through rapid educational expansion.  This led the federal military government of Nigeria to introduce the universal primary education (U.PE) (1976) this programme resulted in population explosion of pupils in primary schools to the extent that the existing school  resources were no longer enough for the pupils now eager to recover education.

The pupils  were sheds and manpower were equally not sufficient leading to the employment of untrained teachers usually described as auxiliary teachers and also the introduction of crash programmes

The graduated of the primary schools found it difficult to get admission in the existing secondary school because of the insufficient number of secondary school is this pushed the government to establish secondary school here and there the communities also established secondary schools through self efforts to enable their children gain admission into schools near their homes to reduce the cost of feeding housing and other sundry expenses etc.

Unfortunately the aim and objective for the establishment of secondary education in Nigeria is no longer  receiving the necessary attention hence our secondary education is facing a lot of set backs. This set backs cluster around ineffective and inefficient management of the secondary schools by the state ministry of education

For the aim and objective of secondary education to reflect its purpose there is the need for both efficiency and effectiveness in the management of the secondary school by both the state education ministry and secondary school management itself.

The success or failure of any school depends partly a the type of leader managing the affairs of the school.  To perform effectively in the educational system and the schools as an educational system and the schools as an administrator the researcher has adopted the definition of leadership as by fielder (1967) and Stogdill (1960)

To Stogdil  leadership is the process of influencing group activities towards goal- setting and goal achievement.  Fielder focused on personal decision of leaders as constituting leadership effectiveness. He is of the view that a group success depends on two factors the leadership style and the amount  of control and influence the leader has on a group also that task and  outcome.  It goes on to define the leader as the individuals in the group given the task related group activities and who in the absence of designated leader carries the primary responsibility of performing these functionless in the group.

The research beloved that a study on the problems and prospect  of the administration of the secondary  school in Enugu Urban would help to facilitate qualitative secondary education. It is hoped that it work have a better favourable impact on secondary school administration

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Effective and efficient  educational administration is necessary for the achievement of educational aims and objective changes in aims of education will invariable lead to change administrative plans which in turn will give rise to problems of finance and ineffective manpower resources which are the necessary factors of administration needed for execution of educational objectives…

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
For an organization to operate smoothly there are must be motivation between the employer and there employees. Also noting the fact that the actors in our organization system are not the same, it is very obvious that there must be conflict between the parties from time to time. Therefore, what should be paramount to both the employer and the employee should be how to settle such conflicts and still go ahead without necessarily disturbing the system. This is where motivation comes in.

The problem of employees dissatisfied at work, poor motivational techniques are seen to have influence are the motivational techniques used by some personnel managers who think motivation is only giving money without job satisfaction. In motivating staff, their job problems must be considered and compared with that of the counterpart in other organization with as well as a designed working condition.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
It is a known fact that the principal motive of management of any organization is to make individual and people contribute positively toward the activities which it consist. So as to achieve the mission of the enterprise employee is motivated.

Hermanan motives are based on need such as the psychological requirement for water, food and shelter. Other need may be regarded as secondary such as self esteem status, motivation has become one of the most indispensable factors in management towards the achievement of organizational goals and objectives.

Motivation is known to be the foundation for better performance and maximization of output in an organization when workers are not well motivated. Efficient use of their physical and metal doom for the organization because it is one of the success or failure of an organization.

There are motivational questions that need to be answered so that usage can be made of their mental and physical abilities for a maximization of output in the organization. In motivating staff for a better performance, their need must be satisfied.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
In the past years, there has been a steady increase in most Nigerian industries, the crisis is as a result of a poor working condition, stringent rules poor and delayed remunerations.

Also, the crisis results from the failure of the top management to appreciate to human element as the most crucial factor and the determination of attainment of goals and objectives. This result into frustration which manifest itself differently by individual or workers. It is view of this that this research intends to look at the effect of motivation on employee’s performance in an organization using global polythene leather industry…

INTRODUCTION

  1. BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Profit maximization was regarded as the primary mission and over-reaching economic motive of any business enterprises little or no attention was paid to the fact that, in pursuit of their profit objective, business enterprises have to be ask to assemble the resource from the local environment and have the stable socio-political and investment climate in which to operate successfully. If business organization relies on society for existence, it is only logical that this environment be acculturated and nurtured to ensure its continuity. It is in this regard that the orientation of the modern business manager has changed to reflect the increasingly important interdependence between organizations and there environments with these, there is an increasing public glamour that business should participate actively in the well being and environment in which they operate and make their profit.

However, the aim of establishing any business is to provide competitive goods and services to the consumer and society at large. This does not however, mean that they have concluded their obligation to the people especially to the host community where the business is sited and operated.

Although there is no law as what form of services the host community should benefit from the business, it is morally obliged to cater for at least their host. This they do by aiding the development of infrastructures such as access roads where necessary and the provision of good water for domestic use and also the provision of electricity of the local population. Other forms of services that could be rendered for the young members of that community and of course the provision of gainful employment for those who have graduated from college.

There are a lot of other services that the host community can benefit from the business such as the provision of safety measures against pollution other air or water. On the other hand, to the business also look forward to the local populace, for continued patronage and also for ensuring the safety of lives and properties of the business and employees of that business who are not from that community. Therefore, the recognition by businessmen of the need to keep the good of society as a whole to mind while conducting business in the bed-rock of social responsibility.

1.2       STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The controversy about the public clamor that business should participate actively in the well being and welfare of the community, society environment in which they operate and make their profit are the problems among others this research intend to solve. Has business social responsibility any part to play in the total marketing effort of business organizations or enterprises?

Does business social responsibility contribute anything to the total revenue of the company? Is the conception that there is no need for business enterprise to be socially responsible to its society “SHELL PORT- HARCOURT” true or false? Of what use is business social responsibility to the general public? The problem for this research is what the responsiveness of companies to social responsibility is.

The following research hypothesis are formulated for the purpose of carrying out this project of which:

Introduction

A firm usually evaluates its working capital management whether small or medium. The sole motive of every business is to make profit.

Many organization can be seen to have bee forced out of business simply because of inadequate or excessive management of working capital.

This could be as a result of overtrading, under trading, lack of a careful appraisal of the procedure of organization of business and probably due to future to review the effectiveness or other wise of existing system of control.

In this chapter, the concept and general principle of working capital in relation to choosing organization of study, there is no company required, but it is an obvious fact that its current assets are insufficient to meet current liabilities, that is there is no working capital. CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Improving employee performance and morale through effective communication which make a effective in his job. Managers in general and industrial psychologist have been sticking to improve worker effectiveness in his job. As noted by from (164:191) a substantial proportions of the research in this  field has  been concerned ,with explaining individual difference in job performance. Also many of the methods used by professional industrial psychologists are directed towards increasing the level of performance of workers. Certain factors have been widely recognized as having reasonable influence on the morals and performance of employee in industrial firms. Vom (1964:91)  for instance  stressed the importance of motivation.

Middle West and Hill (1988:3160  viewed communication between two or more people to achieve a common understanding  about an  object or  a situation. The process of communication starts with the formation of ideas by the sender (know as ideation which is the content of the message the sender want to transmit. In the next step, encoding, the ideas are organized into a series of symbols designed to the intended receiver(s) suitable  words or phrases that must  be understood by the receiver(s) and the appropriate medium or media to be used memorandum, conference, etc were selected.

Next transmission of the message takes place  as encoded through selected channels in the organization structure. In transmission the message is then received and then decoded, or changed in to the form to be understood by the receiver.

In the next step, the receiver takes  action or responds by filling the information, asking for more information etc. Communication has not taken place unless there is some type of feedback to the sender in the message received.

Possible barriers exist to the communication process, and such barriers could exist in any stage of the communication process. These include poor reception poor listening semantics, Cultural difference and Organizational climate etc.

(Sherman et al, 1998:322). These barriers sometimes referred to as noise, could be removed or reduced through adequate knowledge of then and concerted efforts at taking certain steps such as training for improved perceptual ability, proper non evaluative  listening use of simple words, conciseness and specificity other include improving the organizational climate encouraging openness) sincerity on the part of management encouraging the needs of employees, proper timing and use of appropriate channels and media (Sherman et al;  1988:328) within and outside the organization programmes.

Effective communication requires mutual understanding and achieving effective communication is a challenge. As middlemost and hitt (1988:317) pointed out, poor communication, is cited as the basis of conflict with in organizational problems. Good communication is also the basis of effective leadership. The motivation of subordinated and he exercise of powder and influence. The authors noted further that improving communication is not an easy task communication has also been show that an integral part of corporate strategy.

As subordinate may feel insulted because of a manager’s wrong choice of words in communication or that a manager has degraded him self or herself because of such wrong choice of words. Thus communication may have an important bearing on the morals of workers

The overall performance of an organization depends on the extent to which the organization accomplishes its set down goals, which is determined largely by individual workers performance. The research meant that mangers In general and industrial psychologists in particular have lung been interested in the conditions which make a worker effective in his job. As noted by Vom (1964-191) a substantial proportions of  the research in his field has been concerned with explaining individual differences in job performance.

  • PROBLEMS ASSOCIATION WITH THE SUBJECT MATTER

In the ideal situation without  an organization communication is supposed to be basically a two way process from suppr ordinates to subordinates and vice versa and lateral between the vice verse level.
